Susan Burdorf is a great storyteller! This book will keep you involved from beginning to end, whether Helen is fighting with her arch nemesis, falling in love, or trying to figure out who she is. This story holds several important messages about being in charge of your own destiny and believing in yourself. A great read for anyone, especially young girls whose self image is challenged every day.

I was gifted this book by the author in exchange for a fair review.

This is the first published work of Susan Burdorf. So lets keep them coming Susan!
The blurb describes this book as an updated Tale of the Ugly Duckling. It is so much more. This story is not just about Helen wanting, needing to find the parents who abandoned her. This story is also about bullying, feelings of abandonment, feelings of superiority, feelings of inferiority, finding strength to find yourself and finding acceptance and love. Great job Susan! Great book!

Thank you Susan for this reminder that what is skin deep can often be a mask for a haughty mean spirit and that beauty is kindness, thoughtfulness, and selflessness. Your characters bring this tale to life and help us realize our families are those who see our worth by our actions and appreciate who we are inside.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Helen is a foster kid that moves in with the Greens. She has been bullied since kindergarten for being overweight and having white hair. She doesn't know anything about her parents, since they left her at a churches doorstep a few days after her being born. Since her history teacher just had surgery, a substitute is filling in; and when she gives the class a heritage project, she isn't aware of Helen's problem. Helen decides to look for clues involving her past, with Travis (her crush) right by her side.

I have been bullied my whole life, so I understand what it's like. I wasn't surprised when I saw how many kids didn't go to school, because of bullies. This book shows us that even if you don't know it, their is someone right in your school that is being bullied, too! Bullying is not right and in this book one of the bullies, Rachel, finds that out the hard way.

I think this story will connect with most people, because I feel that most of us have gone through periods in our lives in which we have felt excluded, shunned, and, possibly, bullied. I don't know what it is about human nature that makes that dynamic so universal, but I do know that this author aptly captures the experience in this debut novel.
