The real issues here are the light's brightness, and 'sequence modes' of switch, and 'running time' or battery charge duration. 1st - The rating for 1100 LUMEN is basically bogus because the only mode that is rated at 1100 lumen is the mode called "Boost Mode" (that is not the 'high' mode which is substantially lower than 1100 lumen) which is apparently only to be used selectively, almost for emergencies situations, because the battery run time on this is really short - like 20 minutes. However, this will never matter if you cannot ever access this mode, as in myself, I was never able to switch the "Boost Mode" on and was only able to get low, med., high (high is not rated at 1100) and a thing called "triple flash" which is a steady beam with a second inner bulb, going on and off, that does not at all flash, but only very, very dimly 'flickers'. The product box states that "triple flash" will give a 'run time' of 22 hours. My use of it, fully charged, was approx. 4 hours. That is actually very good time length, but the brightness is very low and so the run time is irrelevant. 2nd - The switching modes: many reviewers complain about the defective switch and not being able to access the modes - low, medium, flash, etc.. There are 9 modes and I have never been able to get into all of the 9, only 4 modes. One buys this for the fancy flashing and pulsing but I was not ever able to get those. So, since all 8 of the modes are dramatically more dim than 1100 and the only one, 1100 mode, is the 9th "Boost Mode" - which I can never switch into - this light is not a good value and actually tremendously overpriced. One is paying for fancy stuff that they will never actually receive. The switches are defective. I sent this back for a refund and received a refund for the above reasons. My thanks to the seller for honoring the return and that represents them well.
I would like to say something positive about this product: this is not being sold by the manufacturer, but I have contacted Cygolite Corp. online and they state in E-Mail writing that the 1 year limited warranty will be honored when purchased on Amazon ( simply register online at Cygolite .com ). The charging time given at 2-3 hours is accurate and truthful - much better than many lights. Additionally, this is an attractive light and I especially liked the ease and simplicity of the mounting bracket. If this light worked correctly it would be an excellent product.
I went back to the cheap, rubbish BLITZU light (YouTube - how to use the blitzu gator 320 led) which has a very short charging time, long run time and is MORE bright than Cygolite because I simply use 4 Blitzu at a time for about 1300 lumen. These are very cheaply made, but because of the low price I view it as temporary and replaceable. I have used them successfully for 6 months after returning several defective ones. Incidentally, again, I have returned 4 of these lights to OUTAIR, sold under the name OUTAIR, and not Blitzu and I have recently ordered 4 of them, as a gamble, from Blitzu on Amazon ( I believe they are sold by the Blitzu Comp. themselves, but who knows who actually makes them ) and I will test them tomorrow. Amazon search: " blitzu gator 320 usb led ".
Ran the pair on the highest setting for the duration of the one-hour test ride in a steady WA rain. Bright? These are so bright you can see the future. Want to light up the inside of a car brighter than a dome light can? From your bike? Window tint is no barrier either - was passed by a guy in a BMW with the Russian mafia tint and could see the back of his head through the back window. A number of times I'd find myself on the road, noticing that traffic signs were glowing 2-3 country blocks away or more, and I'd start looking behind me to see how far back the oncoming car was, only to find nobody was there - "Hey, that's me! That's my lights!"
Cutting through the nature trails at the center of the Mill Creek community, I had previously been navigating them after dark with a roughly 50% seeing, 40% memory, and 10% luck ratio - not only longer. These lights lit up the trail like it was daylight around me. It was awesome.
Another cool, unintended benefit of bar-mounting these lights - if you ride in the rain, your front tire will throw water up into the lights, and it'll sparkle like a fountain lit up with a spotlight. Just don't get too distracted by your spray patterns....
Very happy with my purchase right now, will edit the review if anything changes that.
He moved out three months ago, and rides home from work usually around 9 - 10 at night. Now, it's been summer so it's light late, and he probably runs it on low settings with his youthful eyes and good night vision, but three months is still really impressive. This light blows away my Taz 1200, which even on the low settings, the minute you turn it on you are living on borrowed time. For what I spent on it (used) I could have had two of these, so much buyer's remorse.
I've had three Cygolites (a Metro 550, an Expilion 800, and this one) and I've been extremely satisfied with all of them, but between those two and this one they made some major breakthroughs in battery life. In addition to that, it's lightweight, bright, durable, and the price is fantastic. Buy two, is my advice (there's a reason cars have two headlights as far apart as they can be, instead of one big one in the middle. The same reason two eyes are better than one, binocular vision. Depth perception and the ability to pick out small but important details like a fresh patch of road-colored gravel on your night time commute).
Between performance, reliability, and value I'd consider this the definitive commuter light.

The brightness is amazing, so you really can ride with confidence in dark country lanes which are otherwise pitch black.
The battery actually lasts as long as the manufacturer says. That is a long time obviously depending on the setting.
It has a good range of settings.
During the day use it with "double flash" and be sure oncoming motorists WILL see you, in in bright daylight.
It recharges quickly.
It is very light weight.
It is not the cheapest cycle lamp you can buy but it is unquestionably great value for money.
