About the Author
Melinda Kinsman lives on a small peninsular called The Wirral, in North West England. She loves climbing mountains and rock-climbing (both abroad, and in her local mountains of Snowdonia), and she has always had a soft-spot for cuddly toys!
As Melinda has to lie down a lot each day, due to health issues, she spends most of that time using her iPad to write and illustrate her books. (Drawing can be especially challenging, as she needs to keep the iPad steady by balancing it with one leg up in the air - much to the amusement of her family!)
Melinda originally wrote a book of poems for her 6 year old niece a few years ago, but never dreamt of trying to publish them, or of trying to illustrate them herself. The advent of ebooks and handheld tablets now makes self-publishing an exciting possibility for her!
The Top of the Wardrobe Gang series of books are credited to both Melinda and a motley crew of cuddly toy characters. This bunch of cuddly toys live on the Top of the Wardrobe - they like to call this the "penthouse suite"! They enjoy reading, and want to try writing their own books. Most of the cartoon gang characters are based on "real" members of Melinda's cuddly toy family.

Who wouldn't like a cute story about a squirrel named Cyril and his younger sister Beth? Toss in Molly the Mouse for some added adventure along the way home.
There are several things that I appreciated in addition to this creative story that I liked and they are: there is a green leaf challenge on each page in which the children can search for that one item (keep them occupied and busy, right?); there are some 'big' words that the parent will be able to explain to the kids - 'concealed, elation, simpering, and frustration' to name a few; at the end of the story there is a section that the younger ones can compare shadows to pictures and also a most educational section (Nature Notes) which tells how leaves change their color.
With the leaves falling now in Vermont, we are approaching the winter season. And, yes, the squirrels are gathering their nuts getting ready for the long winter ahead. As for acorn stew, not sure if they have made that yet but before the winter is over I can guarantee that they will at some point.
The story is really cute and Cyril uses his imagination several times to assist his sister Beth escape from calamities. And, they are so happy to be back home with Mom after their adventurous romp with the sack full of nuts that they have gathered.
Highest praise from me for all aspects of the book.
Most highly recommended..
Stepping away from her usual entire Wardrobe Gang stories Melinda has concocted a delightful animal story that not only has a fine adventure tale told in Melinda’s charming rhyme (and with her illustrations which as fine as they come!), but the story also lets children learn about the habits of squirrels – Cyril the Squirrel again our main character.
Cyril is out in the autumn woods gathering nuts and when his sack is full he calls to his sister Beth to return home. On he goes with all his nuts in his bag, but as the day begins to darken he notices Beth isn’t with him. He hears and sees an owl who seems to be a predator and in fear of Beth’s safety he uses his nuts to hurl at the hunting owl – and fortunately Cyril’s ammunition hits the owl’s eyes Cyril and Beth continue the road home but encounter a snake who is hungry for squirrels. They climb up the tree to their home where their mother fixes dinner, thinking nothing went wrong!
Not only is this a fine autumn adventure with an emphasis on sibling care, but it also adds visual tests (a green leaf hides on each autumn leaf covered page…) and some information about autumn and other puzzles and tests to keep children coming back to this book for more enjoyment.
That is a Melinda Kinsman trait we have all grown to appreciate! Grady Harp, October 16
The author, Melinda Kinsman, has written another one of her books from 'The top of the wardrobe gang'. These are a collection of animal personalities who live on top of a wardrobe and come out every so often. In this book, Cyril the Squirrel is asked by his mother to take his sister, Beth, andgo and collect acorns. Off they go, and they gather a lot of acorns. Their bags are very full. Soon it is getting dark and Cyril knows it ismtime for the trek home. Along the way, Cyril has quite an adventure, and, then he remembers Beth is not with him. When you read this book you will soon learn all about Cyril and Beth's adventures.
Adults will enjoy reading this book to their children. The children will enjoy learning about Cyril and Beth, and the other animals they meet along the way. The author, Melinda Kinsman, writes in rhyme, and the lilting rhymes are so pleasant to the ears. The illustrations by the author are colorful, bright and vivid. They depict the adventures of Cyril, Beth, and the other animals. The author, Melinda Kinsman, writes such lovely stories, that have lessons to be learned. The entire family will enjoy these stories.

Burton Bear's Nature Notes at the end of the book explain how and why leaves change color. You will also find three puzzles. Don't forget to look for the green leaf on each page that P.D. Monkey has hidden.
I purchased this book for my Kindle when it was on special. Although the author contacted me regarding a review I was under no obligation to post one. Our kids love these books so it is always great fun when a new one is released. Thanks, Liz
