Zimmerman prefers the term attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) to attention deficit disorder (ADD). The teacher and nutritional biochemist posits prevention as the first priority in dealing with AD/HD, but once it is manifest, the most effective approach is to treat causes rather than symptoms--and Ritalin, she believes, is a symptom reliever rather than a treater. She discusses the various causes and stresses the importance of a carefully worked out diagnosis. Once that is reached, treatment can proceed realistically. Proper management of the child's activities and attitudes at home and at school is vital. Suitable foods, attractively prepared and presented, constitute the main element in her program, and she counsels sitting down, relaxing, and chewing at meals. Sugar is dangerous, the widely touted olestra can be troublesome, and even optimal regular nutrition needs supplements, so Zimmerman helpfully details acceptable and unacceptable supplements. As a PS I would also add that if you can only add one supplement to your diet I would recommend omega-3 fatty acids. It is the critical nutritional supplement for the brain and memory.
The best way to get this is with cold-pressed flax oil. Harder to get and more expensive than fish oil, but seems to work better. I personally was using it for something else and then found my own memory was tremendously better. (My son literally thought I was getting Alzheimers before I started). I put it in my morning smoothie. It should not be heated for cooking. Do not use Gingo Biloba in a child, it causes headaches and I found this out the hard way when I took some myself to help my own memory. I had been giving this to my son before I read the book because I had heard it helped with memory.
