-- These are very small and light, much smaller then the impression left from viewing the pictures.
-- There is nothing more to the installation then plug it in and power it up.
-- Its connects to all 8 ports almost instantly. I reach back to plug it in and view the front and all the ports were connected .
-- The ethernet ports on the rear are well labeled and the numbers easily read.
-- What is a true convenience is that the lights on the front phsically match the port on the back. Many other switchs reverse the order and its a total annoyance. On this switch draw a line from the port lights to the connector to know which connector is was activity light. nice!
-- The front lights are easily seen. The ports show different colors for the speed, green for 1G and yellow for 100m.
-- On other switches I've used when cascaded like this there seemed to be some limit to the number of cascades but with these and in my network they all operated no problem.
-- Very very light and can be easily attached to desktop using double side foam tape and it holds in place when cables are attached.
-- How about speed performance? I have all 8 ports used to include a TV, Blu-ray player, 2 home security DVRs which (all 100M ports) are all streaming video for this test. The TV and the Blue-ray are streaming 4K UHD video. In addition I have a laptop (with 1G port) and the R6700 router (also 1G port) connected plus 2 standalone IP security cameras (100M ports). The port light colors were correct, Green for the router and PC and yellow for all others. I could tell no difference in the 4K streaming user interface or video performance when connected through the 8 port switch or when connected directly to the router. Every device connected through the switch performed perfectly without any hint of data slowdown. I did a speed test from my PC for the broadband service and I hit the maximum data rate provided by the ISP.
One thing could be improved:
-- I wish there was something to attach them to a surface. There are no mounting holes . Its a smooth small box.
Conclusion: Other than some 2 sided tape for mounting this is a perfect, fast and economical plug and play 1G switch.
Setup was easy. I plugged in the D-Link 8-Port into a surge protected outlet and then connected an Ethernet cable from the TP-Link Range Extender into the D-Link switch. This used one of the 8 ports, leaving me 7 vacant ports to provide wired internet connections to all my devices. Connecting the range extender with a wired connection was important as it provides the wired connection for all the others. This runs through my home's electrical outlets. This setup is a great solution for cordcutters want to connect Smart TVs and streaming devices by a wired connection.
I have both WiFi and wired connections in my home and I tend to get about 20% more speed with a wired connection - even using a great Linksys AC3200 Tri-Band Smart Wi-Fi Router with Gigabit and USB, Designed for Device-Heavy Homes, Smart Wi-Fi App Enabled to Control Your Network from Anywhere (EA9200) and 60 Mbps internet service.
I highly recommend this switch if you want to add more wired internet connections to your home or office, and it works with range extenders using your home's electrical system.
Top reviews from other countries
I bought two of them to work as a repeaters for a very long run of cable (150m) across my building site from the public fibre connection to my mobile home here in Western Ireland so I wanted cheap and cheerful rather than wasting the costs on a fibre link as it is only temporary until my house is built.
Before I split the cable to go crimping I just tried them end to end to see how they worked... to my astonishment they worked brilliantly with ZERO packet loss! I was using similar brand switches (but I won't mention the manufacturer as I don't want to defame any other product as the distance to be fair is beyond the max Ethernet length) and it had severe packet loss, but now I am able to keep my long cable length without cutting it mid section to install a switch as a repeater and work away without having to fork out hundreds of Euro on fibre optic cable that I might only use for a few months more.
The device is really nice too and very tiny, has no annoying fan and literally works away without any fuss! The Ireland and UK power plug is nice and neat too unlike the horrible brick of thing with the previous product I was using. I'm laying blocks on my house that are smaller than that last power supply plug I was using :) The D-Link one is just slightly larger than an Apple iPhone charger so very handy if you want to install it in an IP66 enclosure for example where space is tight.
So whatever your need for a quick and handy switch/hub this is your toy! I don't normally give such reviews but I am so amazed by the product I think it is only fair! And for such a tiny price too! As I say I thought it would be basic and just get me out of a problem... I had no idea it would be this good.
It's only drawback is that it may get warm quick because of the plastic casing, but it delivers 1Gbps easily, my home network isn't the old 10/100 it used to be now, and it shows already as I have a 3Tb WD My cloud convected to it and it averages 200mbps instead of 20!
Value for money if you're looking for something to get your GigE up and running and you don't want to splash out the cash for a managed switch, it does what it says on the tin 😀
Worth pointing out that it has two difffernt colours flashes to indicate if it’s output if gigaport or limit do 100mb. Seems to handle a mix of both without problem.
Would benefit from hanging hooks or similar to tuck it out the way but light enough to use
Velcro so i did that instead.
