I wanted this to work so badly but could not live with the throttling of network traffic and speed. If there was a way to selectively turn off the D-Link Green Technology that would be a huge plus. I ended up having to send it back and go back to my old Netgear GS108NA that I have had since 2005.

1. The device selectively throttles network traffic and speed via its new, shiny, "D-Link Green Technology" power-saving feature. What this means is that the switch can "intelligently" detect cable length and link status and "adjust power usage accordingly" (D-Llink's words, not mine). In tests across my gigabit subnet, this thing shut down all high-speed data transfers to the lowest common transfer rate, thus crippling all devices, not just the fast ethernet (100Mb/s) devices. Reinstalling my Netgear GS108NA, all devices returned to their native transmit/receive rates.

2. While it supports jumbo frames, it isn't rated for CAT6 UTP cabling.

3. Has auto crossover detection capability, but seemingly at the expense of throughput speeds. If you have daisy-chained network devices, they will be kicked-down to their lowest common standard (10BASE/100BASE).

4. The Quick Install Guide, which everyone should review before purchasing, is NOT available from the D-Link website for review. Only a datasheet is available. Nice.

D-Link Boxee Box - No more software updates, and still lots of bugs
D-Link Green 5-port Gigabit Ethernet switch - Ethernet links dead after just a year, and may have been greenly slowing down my LAN (see other posting, thanks for the tip!) - limiting to 11 MB/sec.
D-Link N router -crashes once a month or more, previous one (replaced by Dlink) used to crash every few days.
TP-Link 8-port Gigabit still working as central house backbone. I will buy another to replace the D-Link.
Netgear N Wifi router - not better than D-Link. Also crashes, causes DHCP NAK at half of the allotted lease.

What do we have to buy, Cisco biz switches? What's the use of buying consumer grade electronics that fail in 15 months? The PCs I created last 3-5 years, usually hard disks die first - don't get me started on Seagate :)

D-Link support asked me to open a browser to connect to this non-working passive hub, to get to it's control web page. I had to explain to them that it isn't an active device, it's passive. They refused to tell me the remaining steps that they wanted me to do, after half hour of discussion, and 40 minutes on hold to even talk to someone. They demanded that I call them from in front of the device - despite that I had already done every test under the sun - checking voltage levels, trying multiple targets, using various network analysis software tools. Bottom line is that the connect signal never came out from the unit, so Windows says the network is down, no matter what else is attached to the hub. It didn't matter that I have written switch fabric software and designed hardware much more sophisticated than their hub. In total, I spent a few hours trying different cables, locations, etc.

I ordered one that crapped out within a week. It just sits there with the power light blinking and nothing else happening. I asked Amazon to replace it, which they quickly and easily did (Amazon's service as usual is excellent), only to have the 2nd one not work either. At first it connects everything just fine, but within 5 minutes it loses every connection. I suspect the issue is with this "green cable detection" method they have which is having issues with my long CAT6 cable (75') going to the router. This problem did not exist when I was using a Netgear JNR3210 as a switch (it functioned flawlessly for several years, I only replaced for a smaller footprint), and since its happened with 2 of these devices, I suspect the problem is with the D-Link switch itself.
Long story short: don't use this device if you need to use a long cable to connect it.

First one lasted 45 days. I hope the second one lasts longer. These things, yes, are basically disposable.

The switch works great, feels really solid, but it is so lite that it tips backwards when I have all the cables plugged in. I put one of my computer speakers on top of it to hold it down and keep it from falling off the desk. It would be great if they could make this thinner and wider so that the weight was more spread out and not close to the back.

Maybe it works well for short cable runs, but didn't work for my needs. The connection from this switch to my router has a cable that is around 25m going through the wall across the room over to spot where I need the switch. The cable tests as 'good' and works fine with no packet losses when directly connected to each device that was to be connected to the switch. That 25m cable connection would not work with the switch. When I moved the switch next to the router and used a 2m cable, the switch did connect but that doesn't fit what I need.

The manufacturer really needs to test cable lengths and post that in the description as there is obviously a limit much lower than the 100m standard.
