Easy to set up, great range

To be fair I've only had this a week, so I can't judge long term performance.

Purchased because my previous router wasn't strong enough to extend the network through out my large home. This was recommended to me by a friend. It has done the job - the network reaches further and (I think) runs faster.

It was also SUPER EASY to set up. I was very impressed with the user-friendliness of the set up process. So non-techy people should have no problems getting up and running on this router.

Don't buy Rev B if you need a working Guest Network

Bought two DIR-860L wireless routers for different houses. Received hardware rev B and upgraded to latest firmware (V2.03). Both routers have serious speed issues with the Guest network enabled. When connected via Wifi to the Guest network data transmission seems to completely stop/hang for 5...6 seconds every 10...20 seconds. I have tried various 2.4GHz settings: HT20/40 coexistence enabled and disabled, manually assigning Wifi channel to least occupied channel #, different levels of transmit power (high, middle, low), etc. Makes no difference. I also have a hardware rev A model, which does not exhibit those problems on the Guest network.
On the primary Wifi network the speed is fine using both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

Initially 2.4GHz speed on one of the Wifi routers after firmware upgrade was even worse, it took forever to load a simple webpage. After much searching the Internet I found the tip to reset the router to factory default after firmware upgrade. Did that and it "improved" the speed somewhat, but Guest network still has the timeouts/hangups for a few seconds every few seconds - this makes for an impossible browsing experience.
Also the firmware web interface D-Link has implemented on the rev B hardware model is horrible, only gives access to very few basic settings, no built in help function to explain some of the settings, etc. If this is the firmware they have on all their newer products I won't buy another D-link again.

Overall it's a well performing router with good features at a very good price.

I’ve used this router for some time now and so far it’s been very good.

In summary:
Pros:
- Has 5 GHz range support (very useful in places where 2.4Ghz range is overcrowded)
- Supports 802.11ac standard
- Range seems good
- WIFI speed is very good
- Easy to setup and configure the WIFI settings
- You can set it to work on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and guest networks all working simultaneously
- USB port
- It’s cheap but has good features (including technologies such as BeamForming)

Cons:
- Only thing I can think of is it doesn’t have replaceable external antennas if you’re considering adding more powerful antennas later. But in my case, I don’t think I will need to add external antennas.

Long story:

Because most of my time I stay in an old apartment complex with set old Wi-Fi routers (using b & g ranges, not even 802.11n standard). So the 2.4 GHz range is pretty crowded with many routers (you can easily check the WIFI networks around you and get some idea about the quality by a free mobile app like ‘Wifi Analyzer’). Before this router I had a lot of problems with WIFI connection (connection dropping suddenly, not being able to connect with the WIFI network for long period of time…).

So I wanted to find my own router with 5 GHz support. Since almost all of my devices support 802.11ac standard I preferred a router which also supported ac.

So D-link DIR-860L seemed to be the perfect candidate, considering its price is just about $30 (just 10 bucks more than a very basic WIFI router).
I was concerned about some people saying they got the older version of the router (Revision A), and that version having certain issues. I ordered prepared to return if it shows any issues in first few weeks. I also contacted few sellers to confirm if they have the Revision B on hand (only one seller confirmed they had Rev B. But they too asked me to buy directly from their warehouse listing which was more expensive, rather than getting the one fulfilled by amazon).

I bought a one sold by ‘Stop n’ Shop’ and fulfilled by Amazon at about $30, and luckily it was a Rev B model!

I have used this for few months now and it has worked very well so far. The 5 GHz range is (still) very clean in my building, so connectivity issues are gone.

Only time I had a problem was very recently the router had its lights turned orange (usually its green) and the network was not available to connect to. So I pulled the plug to turn it off for a couple of minutes and then plugged back again. In a minute or so everything was up and running. Hopefully there’d be no issues again.

There is an update to firmware available on d-link web, I didn’t bother to update it since so far it’s working well. (I’m using Firmware Version: 2.01)
There are apps to control the router settings and the web interface is also easy to use.

There’s interesting features such as ‘Beam Forming’ technology in this model. I’m not sure how well those work, but I’d guess they do well considering the performance of the router to be very good.

As far as the size, it's not that big actually and looks nice (esp without any external antennas etc hanging around). I've added a pic with a Logitech M705 mouse to get some idea of the size.

If you’re concerned, power supply is a 12v and full range 100 – 240v

So overall this router has been very good, will update the review if there’s any new points needs to be added.

Wouldn't buy again

Not impressed. This is the second D-Link DIR-* unit I have purchased. The other was to supply wifi for a small startup and it supplied Wireless N just fine. This unit again is fine for Wireless N, but the AC is buggy at best. The SSID often disappears, only disabling AC and reenabling it helps. Also, on AC the latency between it and my devices is poor[1]. The outgoing Asus RT unit this is replace was consistently quicker and both devices and the units are in the same locations.

I'm giving it 2 stars because Wireless A through N on this device is fine, despite AC failing to work as advertising. My recommendation is to skip thi item and try other options.

I bought this DIR-860L to replace my WNDR3400 Wireless-N router so I can get Wifi AC speeds and also the Gigabit Ethernet internally (Local LAN file transfers).
I received the Rev. B version.

My WNDR3400 has never had a problem. Rock solid since day one. When I do a speedtest over wifi on the WNDR3400 I get ~42Mbps speed.
I setup the DIR-860 and placed it in the exact same spot as the old router and now can't get on the 5Ghz in my living room (one room over with just 1 wall between it and it isn't a brick wall, just drywall, insulation and wood.)
Also with the DIR860L I cannot even stay connected to wifi unless I am in the same room as the router on 5Ghz and when is connected I get 8-13 Mbps on speedtest.com.
It also drops out constantly even if I am standing right next to it.

There is nothing blocking the signal, I have changed the channels that the wifi signals use, I have factory reset it, and it has the newest version of firmware, and disconnected everything else connected to it except the laptop I was testing it with.

Returning this for a refund.
