The most frustrating device I ever owned.
on April 5, 2013
This supposed media player has been abandoned/discontinued for over two years now. The reviews that say "Firmware Update!" in early 2011 convinced me to purchase it, and it's the most regretful purchase I have ever made in my entire life. Please, do not believe that it will get better, because it won't.
This thing takes a long time to boot up. Requires to you to sign up for an account so Boxee can spam your inbox. Setting it up for local media play requires some engineering knowledge. Looses credentials left and right. The apps work when they feel like working. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.
It CANNOT play wmv files. Spare yourself some frustration, just don't even try it. If you ty to fast forward a wmv file, the Boxee would lock up for about 2 minutes before it can resume choppy playing. And this is on a gigabit ethernet network. This also happens with some MKV and AVI files. I believe they have the poorest software implementation on the market. How good is a media player that cannot play media files?
There is zero support. Boxee's own online forums are filled with angry users, and there is nobody from the company to take care of them. It's just abandoned, discontinued, filled with bugs. And somehow STILL being sold.
I purchased the MICCA media player and I've never been happier.
