Product Description

The D-Link DUB-E100 is a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Adapter specifically designed to plug into an available Universal Serial Bus (USB) port on a desktop or laptop PC running Microsoft Windows XP, Me, 2000 or 98SE. Based on USB 2.0, the DUB-E100 extends the transfer speed of earlier USB Fast Ethernet adapters to true 10/100Mbps connectivity. As a USB device, the D-Link DUB-E100 eliminates the need to use an ISA, PCI, or PC Card slot to add LAN connectivity to a PC desktop or laptop computer. Installation and use are further simplified by living up to USBs out-of-the-box installation approach to connecting computer peripherals. You will not need to open the case of your computer, nor will you be required to set IRQs. The D-Link DUB-E100 represents the simplest way to connect your computer to an Ethernet based network. The D-Link DUB-E100 provides a standard RJ-45 connector for a quick and simple method of connecting to an Ethernet 10Mbps or Fast Ethernet 100Mbps based LAN via a network hub or switch. The built-in USB 2.0 cable connects directly to your computer or laptop.Power for the DUB-E100 is provided directly by the USB bus, eliminating the need for an external power adapter. It also supports USBs energy saving suspend and resume functions to minimize power consumption, which is especially useful for laptop/notebook users.

I have an Atom-based motherboard with a single built-in network interface. I needed to add a second network interface so that I could turn the machine into a router. This device worked perfectly for my needs. I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04.3 and it was detected correctly and works perfectly. The connection has been rock solid for about a month now. The 100mb speed wasn't an issue for me since it's still faster than my DSL connection. Very pleased and highly recommended for Linux users.

I decided to turn an old laptop into a router using pfSense since I needed IPSec VPN capabilities for work and I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a new router with this capability. Like most laptops, it only has one Ethernet port, so I decided to buy an adapter to add another port. After plugging in the adapter and installing pfSense 1.2.3, for some reason I could only get 50mbps down even though I could get 100 up. I upgraded to pfSense version 2-RC3 and it seemed to use a new driver for the adapter and now I can get the full 100 up and down. So overall I'm very pleased that it worked for what I wanted, and I'm glad the latest pfSense had a good driver for the adapter that allows me to use it at full speed.

I received this item from Amazon today and had it installed and running in minutes. It's an excellent choice. Basically what it does is allow you to hook up a computer that doesn't have a network card or ethernet connector to a network (including to an internet modem). - I had removed the network card from my older Dell Dimension in order to upgrade it by installing a USB 2.0 card in that slot. - This D-Link adapter makes the network card unnecessary. I installed the D-Link adapter between a Belkin Pre-N wireless router & my computer. - Works Great!!

DUB-E100 USB to Ethernet adapter was returned when I could not get the included driver to work and neither could their support personnel. They concluded it would not work with my XP-Pro with Service Pack-3!!! The package documentation lists minimum requirements as XP with Service Pack-2. Then purchased Belkin F5D5050 unit. Plugged it in and the Windows Plug and Play software found a driver and installed it with zero hassle.

I purchased this for my intel iMac with a non-functioning ethernet port. The adapter is automatically recognized and will hook to the network with zero configuration. Communication speeds are fast.

There are THREE different versions of the DUB-E100. Version A, B, and C. On the manufacturer's site are downloadable drivers for the 3 versions of the device. Different operating systems require different drivers. Also, on some OS's, the 32-bit driver is different than the 64-bit driver. If you install the correct driver for your CPU and Operating System, most likely the device will work!

We've used at least fifty of the previous item with this model number. They work.

I ordered one of these since I needed another. It never worked. Tried on Linux, Windows 7, Windows XP. I think that we got winxp to notice it. However, it never was more than an entry in the USB table.

In short, defective.

Now, I read a lot of reviews on Amazon that say the same thing. Does this mean that there is terrible quality control (since the basic item works so well), or does it mean that Amazon keeps sending out the same defective one that gets returned.

Maybe one of us should mark the defective one when we send it back to Amazon. Then, the next guy who gets it would be able to tell that he was just sent an item someone else determined was bad. Just a thought.

Of course, it could be the manufacturer just has bad quality control. Maybe they should step up. Of course, if you go to D-Link's website, good luck finding this item. They really don't want to be selling these.
