Carroll on February 7, 2008 Verified Purchase Based on some of the reviews here, I bought this to replace a Linksys WPC54G card, which is not supported by Linux (Ubuntu 7.10) without some painful setup. It is revision B5. I had previously set up WPA on Ubuntu for my network. I booted Ubuntu on my laptop (an old Dell Inspiron 8100) with no card. After it was up, I inserted the G650. Ubuntu recognized it and connected to my Linksys WRT54G router with no problems. I rebooted the laptop with the card left in place, and it reconnected to the router with no problems. Note that D-Link absolutely does not support Linux with this card. They're happy to sell you the card, and they do provide a link to the MadWifi group from their Tech Support pages, but they won't touch it otherwise. The DWL-G650 gets 4 stars for two reasons: (1) After a connection to the network is completed, the two indicator lights on the card blink once a second. This is amazingly annoying when I am working on the laptop. The Windows documentation doesn't say anything about being able to turn the blinks off; I have an open support question to D-Link about this. (The Linksys card had one light that stayed solid except for slight blinking during message traffic.) I have a feeling I'm going to have to put some tape over the lights. [2008-02-09 - D-Link support says I'm stuck with the blinking lights. Time for some tape.] (2) Compared to the Linksys, the DWL seems to be less sensitive to signal strength. Even under Windows-7 the WiFi interface had been problematic and the issued continued under Windows-10. Given the advanced age of the laptop, I didn’t want to invest a lot of money fixing the WiFi. In reviewing Amazon’s USB WiFi solutions, the Edimax EW-7811Un appeared to be likely low cost solution were it not for the large number of negative reviews which were offset by the still larger number of positive review. I decided to take a chance and ordered the Edimax EW-7811Un. When the Edimax EW-7811Un arrived, I was able to use the default Windows-10 and Mini CD-ROM to install the driver and support software; however, neither solution worked for longer than several minutes before failing. Most troubling was that the Edimax EW-7811Un “ALMOST” worked. When I read the current product reviews, as they pertain to Windows-10, I realized that my experience was not unique and there were a number of unhappy people who ordered the Edimax EW-7811Un for use with Windows-10. In reviewing several USB WiFi solutions on Amazon, I noticed that the Windows-10 upgrades were more problematic. This could be caused by (1) older and slower hardware or (2) the Windows-10 upgrade image was not quite the same as a native Windows-10 image. For several days I considered writing a scathing review while devising alternative solutions but kept returning to the fact that the software was almost on the cusp of working. Finally, I called the Edimax support number, expecting technical support Hades, only to be quickly connected with a knowledge support technician. When I described the problem, the technician indicated that the wrong software was being distributed for Windows-10 and provided guidance on where to find the correct software, which was not on the primary Edimax website. As Amazon doesn’t support the posting of URL’s, the following navigation is provided on where to find the correct software: Navagation: edimax.us \| support \| download drives On the “Driver & Manual Download” page, go to Section 7 and download the ZIP compressed driver EW-7811Un Win v1.0.1.4, which is the first entry in Section 7. I used a tablet to download the file EW-7811Un_Windows_driver_v1.0.1.4.zip and then transferred the file to Windows-10 using a USB interface. Un-ZIP the file, using Windows-10, and then run the program “Setup”. This not a GUI and runs under a DOS shell, so just wait until it completes. As Edimax Support recommended, reboot your Windows-10 system, and you should be good to go! A few off-the-cuff observations: (1) A built-in laptop WiFi generally has a hidden and sometimes large antenna under the case. The Edimax may not work in WiFi marginal areas of your home. There are Edimax products with large external antennas but these will not have the small form factor of the Edimax EW-7811Un. If the connection is very poor the Edumax is flagged as “Turned Off” and you may have to use Windows-10 to re-enable the WiFi. This could be a bug! (2) I noticed that the Edimax EW-7811Un sometimes appears to go to sleep. Turning Device “Power Management” OFF may correct that problem. I have now run a four hour series of serious stress tests and, with the exception of marginal areas in my home, the Edimax EW-7811Un has performed well. I am giving this product “Five Starts” because of the good performance at a very affordable price point. Yes, Edimax’s software quality control was troubling in this case, but I would give their Technical Support “Six Stars” without a second thought. Microsoft Windows-10 upgrade policy was highly innovative and has given new life to older hardware and after market upgrades such as the Edimax EW-7811Un. Based on some of the reviews here, I bought this to replace a Linksys WPC54G card, which is not supported by Linux (Ubuntu 7.10) without some painful setup. It is revision B5.

I had previously set up WPA on Ubuntu for my network.

I booted Ubuntu on my laptop (an old Dell Inspiron 8100) with no card. After it was up, I inserted the G650. Ubuntu recognized it and connected to my Linksys WRT54G router with no problems. I rebooted the laptop with the card left in place, and it reconnected to the router with no problems.

Note that D-Link absolutely does not support Linux with this card. They're happy to sell you the card, and they do provide a link to the MadWifi group from their Tech Support pages, but they won't touch it otherwise.

The DWL-G650 gets 4 stars for two reasons:

(1) After a connection to the network is completed, the two indicator lights on the card blink once a second. This is amazingly annoying when I am working on the laptop. The Windows documentation doesn't say anything about being able to turn the blinks off; I have an open support question to D-Link about this. (The Linksys card had one light that stayed solid except for slight blinking during message traffic.) I have a feeling I'm going to have to put some tape over the lights. DWL-G650 on Linux?

After failing to get another wireless card working on my Linux laptop, I came across this Atheros-chipset card on Amazon. It comes at a relatively low price, around $15 including shipping.

However, there are some issues to be aware of when using this card on a Linux system. First, early DWL-G650's (hardware version Ax) have a completely different chipset and, as far as I could tell, are not known to work at all under Linux. My guess is that those are the 54-mbps models. (Can anyone verify this?) Mine, which works, is a 108-mbps, hardware version B5.

Second, you need the MadWifi driver to use this card. Ath5k, the newer alternative, didn't work for me. In Debian 4.0 Etch, MadWifi is a pain in the neck to set up. The madwifi-source package from Debian doesn't even compile after the recent kernel update to 2.6.24. You have to download a more recent version of the driver from madwifi.org and compile it. In other words, if you don't have some experience with compiling kernel modules, don't even think about getting this card. (Set-up may be easier in other Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, and maybe it will be easier in Lenny; I don't know.)

That said, I am quite pleased with the card's performance and reliability. I have never had trouble connecting. (But I am on a university campus with access points everywhere, so I don't know how it would work in a home or city setting.)

Didn't work. . .but easy to install

I bought the DWL-G650 card (Version B4) along with the the 624 Router (Version C1) a few days ago. The installation was very easy. The install guide was the best I ever read.
Only one problem, it didn't work. For some reason, I could not get a signal on my laptop with the DWL-G650 card. Several calls to D-Link did not solve the problem. Though the D-Link people are great and their e-mail service is also great, I still could not hook-up.
D-Link told me to send the product back to Amazon since they believe it is either a bad router or a back card.
I'll change the star rating once I get this product to work. But it deserves at least 2 stars for the great install guide and the helpful people at D-Link.
UPDATE: After more converstaions with the D-Link tech suport people, they concluded that the problem was with the latest firmware update (2.48) to this wireless card. When I use the prior firmware update 2.46, I have no problems hooking up with my Di-624 wireless router. HOWEVER, firmware update 2.46 has a WPA bug. So if you are willing to use 2.46 w/out the WPA encryption, this is a great product. The speed is amazing.
Otherwise, you may consider the Linksys w/speedboast.

Wires, who needs them!

Thanks to my research on the Internet, I selected this DLink wireless PC Card. And what a great decision it was. It took 20 minutes to install this card in each laptop, and that included the time to download an updated firmware from support.dlink.com that doubled my connection speed!
I get great performance, and even maintain acceptable performance on the floor below where the signal must find it was way through several walls and doors. In the same room as my router I get lightening fast performance that appears to be as fast as my wired connections.
DLink provides a nice status and config tool as part of installtion, and that really eased the way into verifiying that all was operating properly. You can see signal strength and check on which wireless mode you are operating in.
One suggestion, you should enable WEP to add security and encrpytion to your wireless network. It requires changes to both your router and the wireless card(s), but its pretty simple and I did not notice a big performance impact.
If you are thinking about going wireless, this is a great card to select.
