UPDATE: This device has not aged well and is no longer a recommended purchase. There are better access points from Cisco that do a much better job now

Orgiginal:
Finally a wireless game adapater that works with the Xbox & with WPA encryption. Many game adapters only have the flawed WEP encryption which is almost as bad as having no encryption at all. When I contacted tech support for many of the other products, the techs recommended turning off the encryption which is pointless since my network must be secured & that was the whole reason I upgraded my router to one that supported the WPA TKIP encryption.

The instructions for this router are a little confusing if you have set the router up with anything other than the defaults. For example, if you have have changed the default IP address of your router & the IP range that the DNS will assign, then you may have a little trouble during set up. Once I called tech support, the fix was simple, though undocumented, so don't hesitate to call the tech support if you find you are having similar trouble.

The link is blazingly fast & have not experience any problems with lag. Doesn't have problems with microwaves operating near by or other devices that operate in the 2.4ghz range.

As for anyone that this is not working for, I would say they probably got a defective unit, because I have tried them all & this one is by far the best of the lot.

Another reviewer indicated that his unit required 2 or 3 reboots to start working again....dunno if I should have tried that. I figured if it slowed down to a crawl and stopped working altogther, plus it ran at 120 degrees (measured with an IR thermometer)....well I just don't need that kind of aggravation. No problem returning the unit for full refund after a conversation with D-Link tech support. It smelled and felt like it cooked itself. Too bad I had high hopes, I ended up getting the Microsoft (groan) version for my son's X-Box. $119.....OUCH!!!!

"Plug and Play" is definitely NOT going to happen on this device unless you have all DLink internet equipment. Upon closer reading, I saw it said "only plug and play when using a DLink router." Would've been nice to know before. Plus, it requires constant reboots and rarely allows me to log in. It doesn't accept connections when put in to DHCP mode, which is what I want to use it for. Two stars is pretty generous.

Configuration of this adapter is somewhat painful. I ended up having to use a cross-over cable to connect it to my PC and assigning my PC a static IP address of 192.168.0.51 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (with no DNS server specified) before I was finally able to access the adapter via it's ip of 192.168.0.35.

I bought this gaming adapter for my xbox media center, and had frequent lock-up problems as others have described in their reviews. The lock-ups are caused by improper cooling of the adapter's internal components. D-link's case design on this unit is horrible and is to blame for the poor cooling.

I got frustrated with the lock-ups and was about ready to buy a different unit, when it dawned on me that I might be able to add a heatsink to the thing. First I wanted to see how it would behave if I could take the top cover off and let the heat dissipate that way.

It took a little trial and error, but after disconnecting both the AC adapater and the antenna from the unit, I was able to use my fingers to squeeze beside the front/back end caps of the unit and disassemble the plastic casing without breaking anything. I then decided to leave the top piece off and see if it still locked up. To my surprise, it has been working without lock-up for over five days now, simply due to the fact that it doesn't overheat anymore. I would recommend this to anyone who has experienced similar lock-ups and doesn't want to go through the effort of returning an otherwise decent product.

Bought adapter to attached my DirecTV DVR to my network. Everything else on the network is Linksys but the form factor and WPA encryption made this device an attractive choice. I believe not all versions of the Linksys adapter support WPA. According to the documentation if I was on a fully D-Link system configuration would be automatic, can not vouch for that. Took me about a hour to get everything working together. This device fails the wife test. My wife just connected a new HP printer to the network, as a novice she would not have been able to hook up the D-Link without help. Did have to upgrade the G820 firmware to 2.20 to get the thing to work. For me it does not run particularly hot and has been stable since being installed a week ago. The small size makes the G820 a perfect fit and the throughput is fine. Given the ongoing price drops with electronics I am surprised the adapter has gone up in price here at Amazon since I bought it. Don't think it was onsale when I bought it.

I needed a bridge for my wireless network to the computer downstairs and so my son's Xbox could be mobile. This does the job nicely. Only complaint was the setup. This was not plug and play. I use a d-link router and this would not see the network. After some time with tech support though, we were able to change some settings and get it up and going. Someone with more networking experience than me might not have as much trouble.

I could not get this unit to work wirelessly with the Sony Locationfree LF-PK1 and an Apple Airport Extreme router.

I WAS able to use the Buffalo Technology AirStation Turbo G High Power Wireless Ethernet to stream TV to PSP wirelessly and across the internet.

Tech support was fine, the device was just incompatible with my apple router.

The device seems easy enough to set up, but I returned it within hours after discovering that it does not support AES as a cipher with WPA-PSK. Even though the D-Link website claims it does, after getting bounced around their tech support line for an hour a 2nd level person told me it does not actually support that recommended that I run the less secure TKIP cipher. nice. Guess I will give the Linksys a try.
