If all you are using is a mobile app (no browser, neither on phone nor desktop/laptop), this is not a problem. If you have a desktop, you will not be happy.
The main problem with it is that the video signal randomly just stops transmitting quite often. You have to reboot the camera to get it working again. It isn't that the camera shuts down, goes offline or disconnects from wifi, it is online and you can connect to it... just no video. This makes it very unreliable and frustrating. I am able to connect into my home from work and reboot it so it is more of a huge pain in that respect but what is worse is when I am traveling and want to use the phone app and it just doesn't work. All I get is a black screen. I can tell this is not a problem with the phone or web app because if you log on to the camera's web connection from the local network it is not displaying any video either. This happens at least once or twice per day and sometimes as many as ten times in a day. Since the main purpose of me having a camera is to be able to view a live video feed whenever I want, this issue makes it pretty useless. This camera has maintained this issue from the start and throughout many firmware updates.
If it would just function it wouldn't be bad. It wouldn't be fantastic as I find a lot of other issues with it.. but I could live with the rest if it would just work.
I thought the setup instructions were terrible and the whole setup process quite difficult. I had to call tech support to get it going, which may not sound that abnormal but I have worked in IT for 30 years. Technology is usually my friend and the amount of times I normally have to call support while setting something like this up is extremely rare. The reason for the initial call was because the instructions were missing a vital piece of information needed for setup which was actually to be found hidden in some obscure spot ON THE BOX. However, as it turned out it was good that I had called support because they then walked me through the rest of the convoluted setup process that would have no doubt had me struggling anyway.
The video/sound quality is nothing to write home about but decent enough. The phone app is great if I'm only streaming video but when I turn on the sound both the sound and video get very choppy. Having the website connection is very nice as I like to monitor it while I'm at work and I just leave it up in my browser and check on it every once in awhile. I tried using the sound/motion alert settings initially and spent a lot of time fiddling with it but they just never worked quite right for me. Which is too bad because those were one of the main reasons I chose this model. Now I just leave them off, when at work leave it connected in my web browser and check it every once in awhile. Since I do that I leave the sound off in the website app, however, that annoyingly does not function some of the time. Even though the sound is turned off and has been off and the little icon shows that it is off, it seems to forget it is supposed to be off and then randomly sound will still come through. It is very embarrassing when my dog starts barking and my speakers are on and super loud barks start streaming out of my computer at my office. Then you have to click the sound on and off a few times for it to turn off again.
I usually feel that you get what you pay for but this instance does not follow that rule. I paid WAY too much money for this product assuming I was getting a good quality item. Instead, I got a really expensive hunk of junk. I bought another camera for half the money that has the same feature set as this camera as well as better quality sound and video, is able to pan, tilt and zoom, two way sound, has a slot for a MicroSD card for recording, was a much easier setup, and so far has functioned flawlessly. My advice.. buy ANYTHING else.
I had some old cameras and I did look at many cameras including the over priced security camera's. Based on my budget, these were a great option. I didn't care for PTZ camera's, so these are fine.
Subtracted one star because the set up didn't work (scan cards or WPS). Not that big of a deal to get around, it should just work.
Got what I expected based on reading reviews. There are multiple options for viewing the camera, direct with browser, some free (and paid for) apps on Apples app store and several others (ie: spyconnect.com) on the web as well as some D-Link apps on app store.
Zero light in the basement, can see very well easily 15 feet to the door. Could do further, I'd say 20 feet would be around max.
Crisp view and colors when well lit. For medium light, it seems to revert to a semi-gray scale... whatever, not a big deal.
Easy setup (when you don't use the scan card), takes a few minutes but works
Hard to recognize faces in the dark, kind of expected but wanted to list it just in case.
Scan card set up is garbage, neat idea, poor execution, didn't work for either of my two camera's multiple times
Amazon doesn't price match these. Got them for 89 and two days later bestbuy has them for 69 (might do the refund process, not sure)
Doesn't do video recording based on motion, but makes sense. Lot's of free software on the web for that.
Steps to set them up without scan card.
Plug in, turn on where you have decent WiFi reception
Connect to it's WiFi (as listed on bottom of camera). After SID, password and it connects, it should open a browser to it automatically.
WPS did not work multiple times, so I said "no" to WPS and did my home WiFi SID and password manually.
Select your house WiFi. After you fill out the home WiFi stuff settings, here is what I think happens.
1) The camera reboots
2) Your phone is showing a waiting kind of icon because it lost connection to the camera WiFi
3) After a certain amount of time, your phone doesn't see the camera WiFi SID anymore so it reverts back to your default (probably home) wifi
4) It then connects to the home wifi
By the time this is done, the camera has probably rebooted and connected to your wifi. You can then go to your home router and figure out the IP address. You can open your browser directly to the camera to do any other settings and see the live feed.
Screen shots below, taken through ispyconnect.com application. pretty sure any other way would yield same results.
Camera 1: Absolute zero light in basement. Camera sitting on top of a speaker, over looking air hockey table, towards pool table and double doors.
Camera 2: Sitting on fridge, wife paying bills LOL (Don't tell, she'll be pissed)
