Product Description

Hero Mages is a turn-based tactical strategy fantasy game that combines the fun of role playing games (RPGs) with competitive and cooperative cross-platform multiplayer gameplay. Designed and developed by a single individual driven to share his passion for gaming with the world, Hero Mages also blends the best elements of tabletop miniature and collectible card games.

Hero Mages is played from a top-down perspective allowing the player full visibility over the battlefield. Each player commands a party of three fantasy heroes, including a powerful mage. Equipped with a set of dice and a hand of cards representing magical spells, players take turns commanding their party of heroes. With the power to unleash the wrath of the elements, summon heinous creatures, and manipulate the world itself, the player's mage is their ultimate hero as they leverage skill, politics, and luck to eliminate their enemies and emerge victorious!

Game Play:

This is a role playing fantasy card game that can be played in a single player mode against the AI or multiplayer mode against other opponents via the web and across multiple playing platforms. You can even use email to communicate to the other players within the game. Pressing play gives you the opportunity to see a tutorial, have a quick battle or to play a customized single player battle.

Game play involves a lot of reading and beware that the text font is very small on the Kindle Fire. I cannot imagine what it would be like on a smaller smart device. You are also looking down from the top onto the heads of the people and it is hard to distinguish who is who. There is a hint button in the upper LH side of the board and you will need it to learn the game in the tutorial mode.

Game manual takes you to the developer's web site to view the rules and allow access to app purchasing sites, social networks, news and announcements. Even on the Kindle Fire the text was very small on the instructions but it could be zoomed and panned because you are viewing it on the web. You play the game on a board of an 11 by 13 matrix and the deck of cards represents the power of magic.

Each player is dealt 7 cards and is in command of a unit consisting of 3 people which are a Mage and 2 guardians. Mages has the greatest power in the unit and they feature four un-lockable powers and they are the only member of the unit that can cast spells. The spells are powerful magical acts that can increase your unit's strength, create other units made up of creatures, call upon the elements or change the battlefield all in the effort to destroy your enemy.

The instructions are lengthy and detailed and they will take you a long time to read and learn them.

the gameplay is slow at best, and non-existent at worst. this really should have been a free game, and AI opponents included in the paid version.

I have been playing HM off and on for a year or so and I love the game - don't believe the bad reviews, don't believe the good reviews; judge for yourself. But, as it is the FAotD, do yourself a favor and get it. If you missed the free app of the day, download the trial. The app is worth every penny.

What to expect: Expect to use your brain! HM is a tactical game more akin to Chess than Space Invaders. Expect great support and an active, involved community. Expect to spend hours discovering the nuisance of the game.

What not to expect: Don't expect a fast-paced finger exercise. HM is not a shoot-um-up arcade game; think Chess and Risk combined.

Either this game is for you, or it is not. Personally, I love it. The game is finished! Just because you have to purchase add-ons (for now, the developer is looking at alternatives) to help support development, doesn't mean the game deserves a bad review - the developer is upfront about this process and he even explains why. So, put in a little effort before discounting the game as a typical money grab; it is not. One of the highest rated players on the Leaderboards plays without ever having made a purchase (last I checked) and he's been playing for years. I have all of the packs myself, more to help support the developer than any other reason, though I do play with add-on heroes.

BTW, I am not affiliated with the developer what-so-ever, I am just a devoted fan. Check the HM web site for my posts and you will see (user name Trasd, same as Amazon).

Test device: HTC EVO LTE 4G, stock ICS

I was really excited about this game initially, but the more I played, the more displeased I became. It was a struggle to decide on giving it two stars or three. It has a lot of good elements to it, but there are several nasty aspects the nearly washes away everything pleasant. The game both looks and sounds good, and the controls are simple. There is a single player walkthrough to teach you how the game is played, and a couple of play modes to hone your skills with before challenging live players. While the game never crashed, several times I ran into instances where the computer AI never finished its turn. If you're playing without timed turns (best for learning), this results in a dead game. Multiplayer mode offers a few different modes of play, which is good. But, notifications when it's your turn in a non-live game are all done via email. Seriously?? Perhaps I'm expecting too much, but every other turn based game I play notifies me of my turn right on my device(s).

All said, if I usually played live and didn't need practice, it could be a really fun game. But for newbie me that needs that practice and commonly games in short 5-10min burst, Hero Mages is a bust.

I wanted to like this, I like the whole table top idea, however this is not worth it. the game itself is dull, not many characters. The lack of a single player quest mode really hurts too, that would have mad this game worth 3 bucks. The multiplayer is lacking and when playing you don't get that table top rpg feel, also the fact that all players have the same movement range king of kills it too, yea the dash range is different but so should movement. Even if I had enjoyed any parts of this game it still is not worth three bucks, hell I don't even think 1 dollar would be fair because of how much the game leaves to be desired. Don't waste your money on this one.
