About the Author
Christopher Coleman has had years of first-hand experience as a clinician and researcher who has published extensively on the impact of the virus on African American men. Dr. Coleman is an elected Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and is best known for his work with HIV infected African American men. Dr. Coleman was selected as a NIH/NIA Fellow, 1998 and an NINR Summer Institute Fellow 2002. Additionally, he earned an MPH, from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in 2004 where he focused on the epidemiology of infectious diseases. Christopher Brooks has had a sustained anthropological interest in the contraction and spread of the disease on the African continent, particularly in East and Southern Africa where, in several field trips, he has seen its impact. Dr. Brooks numerous articles about the African continent have been published widely. He has also taught several Africa-specific courses which address the impact of the virus, most recently a graduate course, HIV in Africa. As a prolific author, Christopher Brooks is best-known for documenting the contributions of celebrated African American personalities in our culture. Among his recent major works is the award-winning Follow Your Heart: Moving With the Giants of Jazz, Swing and Rhythm and Blues and the best-selling, I Never Walked Alone, about opera singer Shirley Verrett. He is currently completing the first definitive biography of renowned lyric tenor Roland Hayes.
