DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolors - classic watercolors of unsurpassed purity and permanence. The vision in the formulation of DANIEL SMITH watercolors was twofold;

  • First and foremost, to produce watercolors that are the best in lightfastness and permanence.
  • Second, to offer a selection of truly unique colors.

DANIEL SMITH Watercolors are formulated to meet and exceed the highest industry standards for the manufacture of artist’s paints, and every batch made is tested and analyzed for its performance qualities.

DANIEL SMITH is truly the worldwide leader of watercolors for artists with 240+ beautiful colors in the 15ml watercolors,  the most of any manufacturer. Many are traditional colors relied upon by all artists, and there are many “truly unique” colors made only by DANIEL SMITH that have become so important to watercolor artists.

PrimaTek Watercolors are made from minerals, often semi precious minerals, that have been groundinto pigments, mixed with gum arabic (the binder) and milled into PrimaTek Watercolors. The first was Lapis Lazuli Genuine in 1998, since then, many more have been added such as Amethyst Genuine, Piemontite Genuine and Serpentine Genuine. Most of these colors have wonderful granulating effects that some artists have called “magical”.

Luminescent Watercolors have special optical effects perfect for subjects that have a sparkle, sheen, or reflective glow like the iridescence of hummingbird feathers or the sheen of metals.

Cadmium Hues, DANIEL SMITH has developed safe and vibrant Cadmium Hues with the density and richness of cadmium colors without the cadmium pigment. Virtually identical in color to their namesakes, they are cleaner in mixtures and much stronger in tints. The working properties – staining power, semi-transparency and excellent lightfastness – are nearly identical to those of the low-soluble cadmium colors DANIEL SMITH previously manufactured.

Some unique colors are created exclusively by DANIEL SMITH like Cascade Green, Green Gold and Moonglow.  DANIEL SMITH also finds unusual pigments to make colors like Mayan Red, Lunar Blue and Enviro-Friendly Red Iron Oxide to provide more choices for artists.  Other colors are from pigments DANIEL SMITH has sourced, often from very specific locations, colors like Burgundy Yellow Ochre, Monte Amiata Natural Sienna and Roasted French Ochre.

DANIEL SMITH Watercolors are a favorite of artists all over the world, from professional artists to the beginning watercolorists because of the beautiful colors, consistent performance and lasting color or lightfastness.

DANIEL SMITH Watercolors are packed with high quality pigments using pure gum arabic as the binder – no fillers. For each color, DANIEL SMITH selects the perfect grind to yield particle sizes that maximize the qualities inherent in the pigment, balancing maximum pigment load with minimum vehicle content.

DANIEL SMITH offers many ways to experience their Watercolors as well as providing extra creative means for artists with their Watercolor Grounds, Masking Fluid and Walnut Ink.

  • 15ml Watercolors, available in more than 240 colors, the most of any manufacturer.
  • 5ml Watercolors, available in 88 of the most popular colors DANIEL SMITH makes.
  • Watercolor Sticks, 51 popular DANIEL SMITH Watercolors shaped into stick form to draw and paint with, a new way to expressively use watercolors.
  • Watercolor Dot Cards, a great way to try DANIEL SMITH Watercolors without buying whole tubes of paint. These are dots of pure DANIEL SMITH Watercolors that reactivate into paint with the touch of a wet brush, allowing artists to easily and cost effectively, try many colors. Two sizes: 238 Dot Card to try nearly the entire line of DANIEL SMITH Watercolors and the 66 Dot Card to try many DANIEL SMITH Watercolors.
  • PrimaTek Watercolors, 37 PrimaTek Watercolors, made from minerals, many semi-precious, that are ground into pigments and made into unique watercolors.
  • Luminescent Watercolors, 48 Luminescent Watercolors with optical effects.
  • Watercolor Sets: Essentials Set, PrimaTek Set, Alvaro Castagnet’s Master Set, Primary and Secondary Sets.
  • Watercolor Ground, Paint watercolors on any surface when prepared with DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Ground, available in 4 colors; Titanium White, Buff Titanium, Mars Black and Transparent. Watercolor Ground can help “rescue” a watercolor painting when applied over a mistake, giving an artist a second chance with a new surface to paint on.

When you choose DANIEL SMITH Watercolors and other DANIEL SMITH products, you are choosing the best materials to create with.  DANIEL SMITH products are made in the USA, in Seattle, Washington for artists worldwide.

5.0 out of 5 stars The basic split palette all in one box
By Joanna D. on August 1, 2020
A split palette consists of primary colors: red yellow and blue, but split between warm and cool versions.

This palette has five ml tubes (small but good for trying out) and the colors are
Pyrrol Scarlet (warm red, replaces Cadmium Red.)
Quinacridone Rose (cool red, replaces Alizarin Crimson)
Hansa Yellow Light (cool greenish yellow, replaces Cadmium Lemon)
New Gamboge (warm yelllow, replaces Gamboge no longer made)
French Ultramarine (warm blue, reddish)
Phthalo Blue Green Shade (GS cool, greenish Replaces the less stable Prussian Blue)

Some notes: The New Gamboge oozed out of the tube, this is due to chemical properties of the pigments and binders. The other colors did not ooze out. The Phthalo blue is a beautiful almost turquoise blue and it's VERY strong. It's pretty close to primary cyan. It will stain. It won't lift (come off paper with water in the brush) very easily. But it's a gorgeous color. French Ultramarine is the only color that is one of the oldest originals in palettes and it granulates a bit.

You can get any color mixing these six; you'd only possibly add two more: Burnt Sienna (or Quinacridone Sienna) and either Yellow Ochre or Quinacridone Gold (warm, earthy gold.) or raw sienna, a more transparent version of yellow ochre. Of the choices, I prefer the quinacridones and raw sienna but it's your choice. These eight make a perfect landscape palette.

The Pyrrol Red replaces Cadmium Red and is less opaque. I prefer it over the old Cadmium Red likewise prefer Hansa Yellow to Cadmium Yellow Lemon or any of the cadmium pigments. Not sorry to see them go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and Beautiful Paints
By Jeannie on February 20, 2020
I’ve been working with watercolor for a year now. I’ve used several different student grade brands of watercolor, most of which are fairly good in terms of color saturation and performance. Having tried a honey based pro brand and now Daniel Smith, I prefer the latter... and yes, pro vs student grade does make a difference with performance. Generally, the DS colors are far more concentrated than the student grade paints, making a tiny amount go a loooong way. Also, the paper (100% cotton) absolutely loves them! That being said, the primatek colors do behave A bit differently than the regular DS paints. They granulate naturally. It’s as if the mineral base sits on top of the paper allowing for streakiness, though that may be from not using enough water in my wash. The colors are subtle, except for the rhodonite, which is a pretty vibrant pink. For beautifully subtle, granulating color, I would definitely recommend these. They do dry quicker than the regular paints. It’s as if they absorb the water differently. I also purchased the essentials set. I swatched and mixed the two sets together (photo attached), which resulted in some beautiful colors. The tubes are small, but not as tiny as other reviewers led me to believe. One of the 5ml tubes will fill a full pan with paint left in the tube. The INTERIOR of the Meeden full pans I am using is 2.8mm L x 1.6 W x .08 H. N. When you break it down by cost, I paid less than $4 per full pan. That’s not bad for professional watercolors. The paints arrived on time and were hand delivered to me at my door. The boxes were taped closed and the tubes were full and unopened. All appropriate colors were in the boxes. I’m quite excited to do more painting with these paints!

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely beautiful and these colors are so dynamic
By Emily Chubb on December 22, 2015
I started with the d.smith primary set and realized I had to have the primatek set, absolutely beautiful and these colors are so dynamic. I'm normally drawn to much brighter tones but these colors are, I don't want to say muted, more like earth tones I guess being they are made from mineral stones but still very vibrant in color. I'm absolutely in love with the Amethyst, it actually glistens and shines with minuscule flecks of sparkle. The Jadeite is the best green watercolor I've ever owned. Normally I wouldn't want a blackish/paynes grey type of color in a set but the Hematite, the way it granulates and lays on the paper is gorgeous, and mixes awesome with other colors. The only color I was no so fond of was the Mayan Blue, at first it felt bit streaky right out of the tube but that can be worked with, I guess it just doesn't flow as well as the others but still a pretty color non the less. I'll be saving up for more D. Smith watercolor! Highly recommend this set, I feel like it will add diversity to my paintings. Also, each paint tube is truly filled unlike other brands I've experienced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Execptional paints for artists!
By Caitlyn on December 20, 2016
I am so glad that I purchased this set as an intro to Daniel Smith watercolors. They are truly beautiful on their own, and mixed carefully they make very vibrant colors. I'm already thinking about colors to add to my collection to save time mixing, but you can make almost any color you would want with this set alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Happy to have a primary set!
By Mr. and Mrs. Grey on December 30, 2016
I am happy to own some Daniel Smith tubes! I was prepared to be blown away by the colors after all the hype of it being the best brand around. I will have to experiment some more. One thing I noticed was that it didn't blend very well. The colors sat on top of each other and didn't mud up. I hope this was useful to someone! Happy Painting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Teeny weeny little tubes that go a long way!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 24, 2020
I was initially surprised by the size of the tubes, I wasn't expecting them to be that small! However, the best things come in small packages as these are super-pigmented and super quality and the tiniest dab with water goes a very long way. The variety of colours mixable from 6 paints is stunning. No wonder Professional artists use these, and they have made an amateur very happy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Really interesting and beautiful paints
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 8, 2019
I bought the colours expecting to get paints with unique granulation patterns to make my paintings more interesting, and that's exactly what I got. The pigmentation is amazing.
One con these paints have is that the packaging is very misleading for the "hematite genuine" colour. When I bought this I was expecting to get a beautiful, deep, dark brown with gorgeous granulation. What I got was a dark black colour that does have the granulation, but not the colour I wanted. I do like the hematite paint, but it's not what I was expecting.
