Review

Ben Ohmart, author of the excellent biography on voice actor Paul Frees, does it again with his new Daws Butler: Characters Actor, with a foreword by Nancy Cartwright (voice of Bart Simpson) ($24.95, BearManor Media softcover). Everyone knows Daws Butler (1916-1988). He was, for many years, the voice of Hanna-Barbera. He voiced such well-known characters as Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Quick-Draw McGraw, Elroy Jetson, and many others. He also originated the vocal character of Cap n Crunch on the cereal commercials. (A voice based, according to this book, on actor Charles Butterworth s.) Like the Frees volume, Ben shows an uncanny affinity for his subject. The author is at his best describing Daws Butler s records and cartoon voices. He imbues the text with such fun; you really feel that the author is enjoying his subject s work. This isn t a standard biography. Yes, he gives us the goods: personal letters, copious interviews (family members, friends and co-workers), Daws personal writings, and material from Daws own scrapbooks, but the author adds so much of his own personality to the mix. It isn t fawning, by any means, it s respect for his subject, with a rare critical eye. It makes for an enjoyable reading experience. Ohmart is a good writer, never confusing his reader with pseudo-psychological mumbo-jumbo or disjointed, awkward sentences. His manuscript is clean and readable. I was particularly impressed by the information he was able to assemble from his subject s friends, co-workers and family. The material he gathered was remarkable and he weaved these interviews - and the abundant quotes from Daws himself - effortlessly into his text. The photos are marvelous - many rare, nicely reproduced shots of Daws at work and play. In addition to being a highly readable volume, the layout is very well done. The back matter includes a voice-character list, radio, film, cartoon listings, etc. --Classic Images/Laura Wagner
