It's made out of plastic so if you gave it a good hard smack I imagine it would break, but for normal use around the house it should hold up well. Another neat feature is that the "C" shaped thing that cradles the neck can be folded down when not in use, so it stays out of the way.
As you can see in the pictures, there are two rubber arms which are supposed to go around the guitar's neck. They're a bit long and tend to just fold back behind the neck (on the picture with the bass I pulled them out myself). I suppose if you wanted to you could just clip them off a bit shorter so they would snap into place by themselves.
My only complaint about this is that it's sturdier than it looks - meaning it looks really cheap. I was really disappointed when I pulled it out of the package - it looks and feels like very cheap plastic. It wasn't until I started using it that I realized that it's pretty robust despite it's fragile appearance. Now that I've been using it, I find that it's more useful than I would have guessed. I've clamped it to amps, tables, the backs of chairs, even to a truck tailgate! It's kept my guitar upright and safe in a variety of playing environments where finding something safe to lean a guitar against would have been difficult.
Purchased under the impression that I could clamp this to my standing workstation and be able to suspend my guitar from the lip of the desk, keeping my guitar off the floor and stress off of my cable and jack. NOPE. Strap button on the floor, potential to rack the cable. Hard to imagine a real use for it.
I have found it's ideal as a holder attached to the mixing desk in my studio, since it doesn't take up as much space as a floor stand. Note that the jaws on the clamp will only open up to 2 inches, so this won't work on anything thicker than that. The neck holder swivels to any position, so you can clamp the thing to a mic stand if you like -- I prefer the more sturdy clamp-it-to-the-amp method, since mic stands have been known to tip over. The clamp is strong enough to grab the 1/2 inch lip protruding from my amp and provide a really solid stand.
Well done, again, D'Addario!
