The display is bright enough for me (I wear glasses) and the best thing is this thing is accurate as all get out. I had previously purchased the guitar version of this for my acoustic and electric guitars (same tuner body, with a shorter clamp which attaches on the guitar's peghead) and was very satisfied with them so when this model for violin came along I snapped it up. Liked it so well I ordered a few more for my fiddlin' friends, so I am very happy with the performance of this little tuner. You can flip the display up-side-down with the touch of a button if you wish (for alternate mountings) and you can also change the range with the sharp or flat buttons, if you need to do that sort of thing (say, if you need to tune with a piano that isn't all the way there). Battery life seems to be very good, too, but I don't leave mine on all the time like some folks do (very distracting). It does have an auto shut-off feature which turns the unit's power off after a few minutes if it doesn't detect any sound, to conserve the battery just in case you forget.
This is the best thing to come around in years (IMHO) and it makes life a lot simpler not having to hunt (or lose) clip on scroll tuners any more before a show. BRAVO D'Addario for another great product!
It's smaller than you expect, but the display is bright and easily readable. It's also chromatic, so I would be happier if it displayed an octave number along with the note name. Just so I don't have to think about it.
My only real complaint is that it turns itself off after 10 minutes, which can be annoying if you're still using it. I would have preferred that it restart its shut down timer every time it detected a note.
There has been some confusion due to the lack of instructions, so let me clarify. The "M" (Mode) button switches between the tuner and metronome modes. The button with the rotating arrows inverts the display in case you want to mount the tuner upside down.
The first one failed after a few days and Amazon did an immediate exchange. Good job, Amazon.
The most convenient violin tuner I have found to date. Definitely recommended.
After writing this review, I contacted D'Addario to suggest some ways to fix the problems of this tuner. I was informed by a very helpful man called George Santos that most of these tuners do not have the loose buttons that result in buzzing. He offered to send me out a new one, which I received and which works with no annoying buzz. I would still like the option to disable the automatic shutoff or at least extend it to 20 minutes, but it's still a nice little tuner.
So this is handy, no doubt about it. It is fairly accurate and typically identifies the correct note quickly enough. Sometimes not though.
I leave this on as much as possible to check intonation as I play.
The downsides to this tuner are as follows:
-The automatic battery shut-off is annoying. I'd like the option to leave it on indefinitely.
-The buttons are hard plastic and not well secured. Yep, this means there will be a frequency or two on your violin that will set these little buttons buzzing away. It's quite disruptive when it occurs and could be fixed with rubber buttons instead of hard plastic ones.
These flaws are significant but do not outstrip the tuner's utility. I will continue using it until the day when I curse the buzzing loudly and smash the tuner to bits against the wall. I just hope my violin is disconnected from the tuner by that point.
If this were the only product in its class it would be a 4/5, but with all the other clip on tuning options out there, it's a 3/5 until they fix that darn buzzing!
