Top customer reviews
Using the Kodak zi8 camera set to 720p @60FPS, I fully charged each battery and let them record until the unit shut off. Here are the results:
Kodak KLIC-7004: 78 Minutes
MaximalPower: 65 Minutes
Cheap Generic: 57 Minutes
Not surprisingly, the original Kodak battery was the best. Proof that you get what you pay for if you insist on the best. In terms of value for your buck, the cheapest one is the way to go. You can buy a handful of them at the price of one Kodak battery.
Overall, it makes this mid priced battery irrelevant. Either go for the cheapest one or if you're a real stickler for that extra time per battery, then go with the Kodak.
Amazingly, the Battery is performing well. So, either I got a good one (could be Japanese cells assembled in China) or the newer batteries are better quality than the ones experienced by some older reviewers. My X-10 puts quite a strain on the battery (lots of stuff going on) so time will tell. Anyway, out of the shoot, so to speak, this puppy seems to "take a lickin' and keeps on tickin'." I will keep you posted as time goes by.
BTW, Li-ion cells take a few charges to "form" so their initial capacity improves as they are "broken in." Also, it is not a good idea to run them "dry." They do not like that kind of treatment. Thus, a pair of batteries is a good way to go. They are small and carrying a spare is not a big deal. Swapping them out at about 50% discharge and topping them up before a long shooting session just makes good sense. Remember the logistics involved when you had to carry cassettes of film and disposable AA or $123$ cells in the "bad old days?"
Besides, these little guys are cheap and ship for free, if you're a PRIME subscriber. While Li-ion electrochemistry is constantly improving, there are always "new old stock" items on the shelf and these are usually "priced to move."
Apparently, MaximalPower, at least through this "Amazon Prime" vender, is selling fresh technology - at this time.
Even with all these "caveats," so far so good. We shall see. More to come.
Even a genuine Kodak battery is only good for a little over an hour in the Zi8. The 16GB cards I use are good for over 2 hours of 1080P video. So we'd need two batteries to fill a card.
This battery and the even cheaper ones work fine and provide almost the same shooting time as the Kodak, despite costing a lost less if you can find the Kodak batteries. Yes, ALMOST the same time even though they claim a higher capacity.
I've bought a number of these: The original Kodak and seven "aftermarket" ones including this MaximalPower brand. All work fine, all fit both the camera and my charger perfectly. Yes, I said charger. I picked up an aftermarket charger with two of the even cheaper batteries for less than twice the price of this one. The aftermarket charger will directly charge a battery unlike the Kodak supplied charger which only charges the battery in the camera.
With seven hours plus of battery life, I'm good to go for a day's outing with power to spare.
I purchased a 16GB Class 10 Memory Card for my PlaySport so I could record thee-hours of 720P (60fps) or 1080i (30fps) video without having to swap cards. However the PlaySport will only run for about 65-70 minutes of recording before the battery goes dead. With three total batteries, I just stop recording after an hour and swap to another battery. My three batteries allow me to record for the full three hours at HD settings.
A huge plus is that these batteries are FAR cheaper than the Kodak Branded ones!
