Somebody made money off this thing. I'm not entirely satisfied with it, however. It'll be fun to play with.
To be fair, my expectations for this thing were probably out of line. I have an ingrown hair or something on the back of my neck I want to get a look at. This device is meant more for examining some two-dimensional object up close. It's well-made, comes with a neat little tripod, and does what it's designed to do. Don't expect too much from it and you won't be disappointed.
However, the barrel is a bit wide at 11mm. This is a good thing though, it prevented me from trying to snake it further into my ear than I had to (not that I would). Basically I had it at the entrance to my ear canal and was able to use the focusing ring to inspect all the way to my ear drum. It as a very shallow depth of field so only a narrow area was in focus at any one point in time.
Using the included software (you can also download from the website) I was able to take pictures as well as capture video.
The resolution is a low though (640x480 iirc) and could do with at least 720p (but there are newer and more expensive models with that, I guess).
As I said, it served my purposes.
As for the buyer that said this can fit in an ear canal, I am not sure that is true. Unless there is a major difference in what he has and what I have because I measured mine and it's about 3.5 cm in circumference and more than 1 cm in diameter. The diameter of a wide specula is about 5 mm. There is just no way a long cylinder that is 1 cm in diameter can fit into most people's ears because of the shell-like shape of the ear. I was disappointed because that is what I purchased this for. I was hoping to use it with the stand, but because of the cone I dont know if that would work.
The tripod is neat but shoddy. I just got this and it's already falling apart at a screw (but not broken). Although I can't use it for the reason I wanted to, it's not a bad product. I am sure I can use it for lots of other things. It is great for general magnification. The image quality is good for this price. It focuses at a long distance and in close-up, but there is no auto-focus which sort of ruins it.
If you want to use this for tech use or random things around the home, I recommend it. But I don't think it will work for hygienic or cosmetic reasons. I'm giving it 3 stars because the product is not bad for the price and I know it will still come in handy.
I've got an adapter that can connect this up to a micro port, which my new phone uses, but alas, I can't find a driver for it in the Android market. One day, maybe, I'll be able to use it in the field like a portable scanner... that'd be even cooler.
Only real problem in using was focus, it is sometimes hard to keep in focus. I think because the camera assy. is attached to the usb cable coming out of the tube. And the focus assy. is a ring around the tube that moves the camera in or out. So little jiggles on the cable will de-focus camera.
I did notice that this camera can be focused from almost contact range to near infinity (like a regular camers). That may have some uses too.
Happy with purchase.
