Top customer reviews
My rating is based solely on features versus price. There are better players and entertainment systems on the market, but in this price range this is very competitive. As for value, it will pay for itself in Maalox and general aggravation if you are on a long road trip with bored children. Between the games and videos this should keep them occupied.
For me I love the convenience of having this in the kitchen to catch glimpses of movies while I am cooking. The video is more than adequate, as is the sound quality for close in watching. If I were more of a CD listener I would use that feature too, but to be honest I usually stream my music from a phone to a bluetooth speaker, so am not going to speculate in the sound quality for music.
I tested this with a few DVDs that I own that are problematic in most players. Half read and played without issues. Bear in mind that all of them have issues on my home DVD player. I tested known good DVDs and all played perfectly.
This is a complete system with game controller, remote and a fairly easy to operate set of on-device controls. It's not the sturdiest player I have used, but I can say that it's on par with one hundred dollar plus models that I've owned. So for the niche it occupies it's better than most and as good as any.
If you're on a tight budget or preparing for a road trip with kids you'll find this to be an adequate solution. For personal entertainment it does nearly everything you need. For keeping children occupied it's priceless.
The remote control takes 2 AAA batteries (not included). First step is to fully charge the unit with the AC adapter -- which did not become excessively warm during charging. For a new device to break-in a rechargeable battery by fully charging and then fully depleting before recharging and repeating that cycle three or four times, if possible within a couple weeks, to obtain optimal duration/performance from the battery. A glance at the instruction manual was not illuminating so I proceeded testing this review sample player by trial and error
The antenna (included) plugs in and I pushed the mode button until radio appeared on the screen and then stopped. The device automatically searched for FM radio stations and when it landed on one I liked I pressed the enter button on the remote to stop on it. The sound quality from the two small speakers located under and on either side of the monitor/display were more than adequate. I repeated this process in the VHF TV mode but no stations were detected.
Next I placed a DVD movie in the player, pressed enter and it started right up and played without any problems. Well, there was one problem, the battery was fully depleted after 103 minutes so I could not finish the movie without plugging in the AC adapter – something to note if taking the player on the road. The picture was crystal clear with no breaking-up or freezing. The movie sounded good through the speakers, but I listened to most of it with headphones (not included) and the sound was excellent.
After watching the movie I charged the battery and noted that the green “fully charged” light mentioned in the instruction manual was glowing even though the battery was depleted. There was no red charging light that was supposed to turn green when fully charged, but I noted the green light eventually went off after about three hours, so I assume that was the indication the player was fully charged.
To test the games I plugged the game controller into the back USB port (don’t use the one on the left side it is for a flash drive). I never figured out a way to use just the remote control or the controls on the player console to select a game – it took a combination of actions which I readily admit might be more elegantly done but it worked, so I looked no further. When the game disc is installed, press the play/pause icon button located on the right side of the console in the center of the large silver disc – which brings up the menu pages for the numerous games included.
Next press the down arrow located in this same large silver disc and it will page through the games. To select a game press a digit key on the remote control that corresponds with the game – for example when the screen has the page five games displayed I selected the number four on the remote keypad and the Galaga game appeared on the screen. It played just as I remembered it from long ago, and although the controller is very basic, and would not be comfortable for extended play, but it too performed adequately.
This media player performs many functions but it is not built to withstand a lot of abuse, not surprising given its modest price point, so it may be better in the hands of an adult rather than a child. It should not be left in a hot car or exposed to water, etc. So far it is working well, but if I encounter any issues I will update the review.
