This camera definitely solves a real problem - it allows you to see things that are hard to see otherwise. Is it perfect? No. At the time I am writing this reviews this camera costs $16.99. Is it worth it at that price? Absolutely.

Below you will find my experiences with this camera. The video includes video of my Windows laptop and Linux desktop running the program so you can see what I saw, as well as how I used the hook accessory to change the angle of the camera.

→ In order for the camera to work it needs to be connected to a computer. A laptop works best so you can take it where you need to do your inspection.

→ The camera comes with Windows software, but you can use any software capable of rendering streaming video. In my video I show both the Windows software that came with the software running on Windows, as well as using VLC media player running on Linux. I ordered a USB to mini USB converter and will try streaming the the video to my tablet so it would be easy to carry around. I will post an update if I can get that to work.

→ The camera comes with a CD which contains two programs. There is no documentation how to install and run the software. The software on the CD needs to be copied to your computer. What you get on the CD is not an install program, it is the program itself. Do not start running the program directly from the CD, it will generate an error that it cannot run to the CD disk and then you will not be able to terminate the program. The only way to end the program running directly from the CD it is to shut down Windows. The software package is very basic, but if you don't have any other software capable of streaming video it does the job. "Smart Camera.exe" is the program that shows you what the camera is seeing in real time.

This camera is very impressive in its construction and in its image quality. The lens appears to be glass, and the case appears to be metal, though it is not attracted to magnets. I have not used the included software because I have an iMac. I use Snow Leopard OS 10.6, and I didn't need to install any drivers. VLC 2.1 does a great job running this camera at all resolutions both stills and video. I have also used Apple's Photo Booth, but haven't figured out how to change camera resolutions with Apple's software yet. I use this endoscope primarily for taking photographs, though my tests with videos are equally impressive. At the highest resolutions, the image is a little blurry when the camera is in motion, but when I capture a still image it is much sharper. VLC seems to average the real-time video feed, but photos seem to be the last full scan in its entirety. The LED illumination goes from brighter than you need all the way to completely off. Photo quality in natural light is very good. The product description seems to have a typo. The last value listed is 600*1200, but I think it is actually 1600*1200. The focus is very sharp from about 5cm to 6-1/2cm. I will upload some close-up images of a dollar bill taken at 1600*1200 resolution. I'm sure the images shown are not as sharp as what I uploaded, but you can get an idea of the range of focus. The camera does get warm even with the LEDs off, so I wouldn't leave it plugged in for a long time. The included magnet is very strong and will lift a full sized pair of scissors.

Plugged it in, worked with the included software.
DEFINITELY NOT a 2mp sensor. regular 0.3mp VGA sensor that lets you stretch the image to a larger HD size. 16:9 mode crops the image even smaller.
Focus range is from 1" to 5".
Capsule is 9.9mm not 8.5mm
Image is clear enough to read small print, LEDs are bright and the auto exposure doesn't blow out the image.
For simple projects this will get the job done.

I bought this item to do inspections on engines and other mechanical things that I work on. For that purpose it seems to be pretty reasonable, clear high resolution video was pretty easy to acquire with some software I found on the internet. I did not try to use the software included. You can adjust the led brightness easily with a nice wheel on the side of the USB plug for the pc. It was fairly easy to obtain a good view of most things I was looking at by adjusting the light level and moving the device back and forth to get the focal length right. The big disappointment was that this camera is NOT 8.5 mm in diameter as advertized, it measures 0.393 inches, which is 10 mm. I specifically paid extra for this unit because of its advertized diameter. There are places where it is supposed to fit that it clearly will not fit.

I purchased this as a bore scope to inspect the combustion chambers in my engine. My engine uses 12mm spark plugs so the camera head just barely fit through the hole, as expected. Unfortunately the mirror attachment was slightly larger so it did not fit through the spark plug holes. Ultimately all I could see was the tips of the pistons and the resolution was not great.
For my usage it didn't work very well. However, the software was easy to use and I think it's a pretty inexpensive product that may work well for other projects.
