The DBX 231 EQ is an outstanding product. I am exacting audiophile. The first thing I did was to hook-up the DBX to my system between the preamp and amp.
Next I set the sliders to flat at 0 db boost. An AB comparison of the sound with and without the EQ in the circuit resulted in no audible difference between the two. After that I ser the sliders to +3 db across the audio spectrum. I then compared the EQ out of the circuit with the 3 db boost at constant volume
using the volume control. Again no change in the sound. I was unable to hear the high frequency noise another reviewer heard. I find the 12 db/octave cut useful when playing vinyl. All in all this is a supurb product; unbeleivable at the price.

For the price I doubt if you will find a better EQ. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that there is some noise on the high side. However you can greatly reduce it by not using any of the High frequency bands that are not needed to make the desired improvements.
You can do this by ear, adjusting the right or left side depending on which speaker is closer to the unit and adjusting each high end fader one by one.

I recently bought a pair of Polk Audio TSX 440's. They sound good however I needed to balance them to my taste and the 231 did the job!

The unit is very well made, it weighs 6lbs and it's easy to use.

Note: This unit has XLR connectors but there are RCA/XLR adapters if your system has RCA connectors. Also the black version of the 231 has been discontinued by DBX but the 231s replaces it. The only difference is front panel is silver instead of black.

I have owned one of these for many years. So many that maybe I have the type 1 - I am unable to look now to be sure. I use it to tweek the response of an outdoor stereo array of speakers I use to reproduce organ music for our Lake Association. I have never had a problem with it of any kind. I am redesigning my system now, but the dbx will still be a key part of it.

The EQ is great BUT the one I received was the 231sv which is SILVER not black. Even though other buyers got the regular 231 with the black face plate. I specially bought this one (knowing paying more) because I wanted it to be black. You can purchase a 231sv on Amazon from DBX for $40 cheaper than this one. This is VERY frustrating. Not going to return the unit because its not worth the hassle as I need it in my install. Just really wanted it to be black and I would've bought it from DBX and saved money if I would have known better. Just a heads up as the plain 231 is older and future buyers will likely receive the newer silver model like I did.

it provides the ability to change small measures in frequency, instead of larger ones that produces unwanted sound coloration. great price-almost the same price as 10 and 12 band equalizers.
