You think you know why our government in Washington is broken, but you really don't. You think it's broken because politicians curry favor with special interests and activists of the Left or Right. There's something to that and it helps explain why these politicians can't find common ground, but it misses the root cause. A half century ago, elected officials in Congress and the White House figured out a new system for enacting laws and spending programs--one that lets them take credit for promising good news while avoiding blame for government producing bad results. With five key tricks, politicians of both parties now avoid accounting to us for what government actually does to us.

While you understand that these politicians seem to pull rabbits out of hats, hardly anyone sees the sleight of hand by which they get away with their tricks. Otherwise, their tricks wouldn't work.
DC Confidential exposes the sleights of hand. Once they are brought to light, we can stop the tricks, fix our broken government, and make Washington work for us once again.

The book explains the necessary reform and lays out an action plan to put it in place. Stopping the tricks would be a constructive, inclusive response to the anger that Americans from across the political spectrum feel toward what should be our government.

Review

PRAISE FOR DC CONFIDENTIAL

“This is an alarming book, and indeed we should be alarmed.”
―Governor Howard Dean

“This book should be required reading for anyone who believes it’s still possible to reform our failing public institutions and put the federal government back to work for the American people.”
―Senator Mike Lee

“Who is responsible for broken government? Not the people who run it. David Schoenbrod vividly explains how Washington mutated from Democratic accountability to no accountability at all.
DC Confidential will make you want to grab your pitchforks. This system can’t be fixed. It must be rebuilt to honor the first principle of the American republic: human responsibility.”
―Philip K. Howard
Author of the
New York Times best seller The Death of Common Sense and The Rule of Nobody
Founder, Common Good

“Otto von Bismarck once said, ‘Never watch laws or sausages being made.’ It is true that lawmaking is, and always has been, a messy and at times stomach-turning process. But that does not mean it has to be too dysfunctional to solve a society’s major problems. David Schoenbrod takes us inside the sausage factory of Washington, pointing out with precision the five key ways problem solving is distorted to meet the needs of politicians and insiders. Most importantly, he offers some practical ideas to clean up the process and make it work better for all.”
―Norman J. Ornstein
Coauthor of the
New York Times best seller It’s Even Worse than It Looks
Resident scholar, American Enterprise Institute

“I’m certain Humphrey would be delighted with your book. As am I.”
―John G. Stewart, legislative director to Senator (D-MN) and Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey (1962–1969)

Excellent bipartisan insight into what is the matter with politics. Clear but depressing

Eye opening and well written.

We've become so accustomed to broken government that the central idea expressed in this book seems preposterously empowering and democratic: that we, the people, regardless of political affiliation, could actually do something to fix it. To begin with--wait a minute, back up--that we could even begin to comprehend these amazingly complex problems is near-heresy all by itself. Remember the word 'bipartisan'? The way things actually used to get accomplished in government and haven't in oh so long, like, say, the enactment of many important environmental laws of the 1970's? We need to get back there, and soon. No one benefits from congressional stonewalling and deception. Here, folks, is the key to Finnegans Wake. Buy it, read it, use it. Preferably, the sooner the better.

Highly recommend this book. Mr. Schoenbrod, in very straightforward language, demonstrates with five key “tricks” how Congress is able to evade responsibility for the hard choices we elect them to make. These are tricks hiding in plain sight, we’ve all read about the evils of gerrymandering and campaign finance, but in D.C. Confidential, Mr. Schoenbrod walks the reader through the “tricks” that allow Congress to take credit for promising benefits, but avoid the blame for any corresponding costs. From hidden debt guarantees to war powers abdication, this is a must read for anyone interested in why Congress no longer functions properly, and how we can fix it.
