Welcome to the DC Universe in 1950s America — a land of promise and paranoia, of glittering cities and segregated slums, of dizzying scientific progress and simmering Cold War conflict. A land without the Justice League—Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Or so it seems.

The masked mystery men who fought for freedom in the Second World War have been outlawed. The soldiers and spies who conducted top-secret missions into the unknown now work in the shadows. And those icons who do still fight on — Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman — operate under hidden agendas and dueling ideologies.

Yet this America needs its heroes more than ever. With darkness gathering on the horizon once more, only a bold new generation of adventurers — young, daring, and dedicated to the better angels of our nature — is equal to the challenge of the New Frontier.

From Eisner Award–winning writer-artist Darwyn Cooke and Eisner Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart comes DC: THE NEW FRONTIER — a timeless tale of idealism that has become one of the most acclaimed superhero comics of the 21st century. This edition collects the original 6-issue miniseries together with the JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER SPECIAL, and features over 50 pages of designs, sketches and preliminary artwork from the author.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Composed from equal parts affection and ambition, Darwyn Cooke's DC: The New Frontier looks back to the Silver Age of DC comic-book heroes, finding in them all the elements needed for a commentary on post-war America. Using a classic style, Cooke creates a classic of his own." -- A.V. Club/The Onion

"Mr. Cooke's drawings are striking, and his plot makes good use of DC's diverse characters." --
The New York Times

"You need to drop what you're doing and go read
New Frontier. Now." -- IGN

"Cooke has stirringly laid out a promising new path for the superhero genre." --
Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Darwyn Cooke was an Eisner Award-winning cartoonist and animator. After spending several years as a magazine art director and graphic designer, Cooke switched careers and began working in animation, where he contributed to such shows as Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, and Men in Black: The Series. DC Comics then approached Cooke to write and illustrate Batman: Ego, which Cooke had pitched unsuccessfully several years earlier. The critical success of the title led to the relaunch of the Catwoman series with writer Ed Brubaker. Cooke then spent several years writing and drawing the ambitious epic The New Frontier. He was also the writer/artist of Before Watchmen: Minutemen and co-writer of Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre.

Beautiful, Pulpy, But Not For Everyone
Worth it for Cooke’s timeless designs of both characters and settings that breathe life into his story, which melds real-world politics (1960’s) with golden/silver-age DC comic lore.

Great all around. From the individual back stories of all the MANY characters in this comic. I loved the blending of eras, the end of one, beginning of another. The old school way with everyone smoking and drinking. It was a great call back to that time in comic history and the new age that was upon us. Goes a little bit all over the place at the beginning trying to show a glimpse of what's been going on and how things are going and where they are leading. Just a great story arc in general. The art was so fantastic, I love the look that darwyn Cooke has in his stories. Looks like it's done in a very thin marker and its soooo hard to draw in markers. The dialogue and just the way the characters speak was done again so well. My favorite part is probably the john jonz stuff because it gives him a nice backstory and the way it intertwines and where was a touch of genius. Highly recommend this to any comic fan or fan of these ages in comics. Truly a all around masterpiece and think any comic fan would love and get a great deal of enjoyment and entertainment out of this entire comic.

Written by the late Darwyn Cooke this sprawling epic the great league stories of our time. Every character has a something to do no matter how small their role is or how big it is from Hal Jordan’s call to action to become Green lantern, Barry finding his role in the world as Flash J’onn J’onzz finding and accepting his new home on earth as Martian Manhunter. All these story lines come together in the climax perfectly. With heavily political commentary on war, racism, and protecting the identity on how it effects people and how people change from those experiences to become better people and better hero’s to strive for a better tomorrow a new frontier.

Starts as a slow burn introducing us to heroes before they become heroes, danger looms and they each shine through courage and bravery, until they all unite, to defeat an evil that threatens all mankind.

the book itself in its condition, i am bugged by, my first initial pages had pages fused together and the prints faded.
recommend checking over the book after getting it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Love Letter to the Golden Age of Comics
Reviewed in India on April 1, 2024
A touching, inspiring, nostalgic take on the defining era of Geopolitical history, during and post world war 2. Shows conflicts - internal and external, pain, ambitions, vision, and evolution of many DC comics stalwarts. A masterpiece in every sense of the way, this one turns back the clock and takes the reader to a trip down the memory lane with many real life icons peppered throughout the book. The way superheroes were conceived back then, and how the world war shaped many of the decisions that were taken with regards to them is nicely chronicled.

Then there is the artwork. Magnificence beyond anything, every panel is a treat for the eyes. Storytelling is impeccable as well with the chapter "Analog Heroes" a lesson in 1st person narrative storytelling.

A must have for every DC fan.

Arrived in safe packaging, thanks Amazon.

Amazing graphic novel but the edition that has been sent, it’s not the DC Label Ed.
It’s a paperback cover, which imo makes reading easier than an hardcover, the pages aren’t glossy but it didn’t matter since I’m not a fan of glossy pages.
The story and art are incredible, highly recommended!
