3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting story, but sub-par animation

I really wanted to like this movie. But there's a few things that hold it back.

First off though, the story is pretty good. I'm sure it's adapted from a comic book storyline, but I'm judging it solely based off this movie. Lex Luthor becomes the president of the US. Superman obviously doesn't trust him. Then a Kryptonite meteor is headed straight for Earth, and it's a race to see who can save the day first, Lex Luthor using his shady methods, or Superman and Batman. The movie moves fast, and has a few twists. But overall it has a point, and doesn't over complicate things.

The animation is rough though. And the character designs are not great. Yes, I know these are comic book characters. But the superhero men are body builders wearing spandex, and the women are so overly sexualized. But both don't have a good shared art design (like the DCAU). Powergirl has always been ridiculously designed. But here seems worse. This is a shared trait with Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. It's a shame, because the animation is very bright. Which at first glance makes it feel like it's for a younger audience. But based on the sexual designs, some creepy sexual advances by Luthor, and some cursing, it's definitely not for young kids.

The movie is actually quite self-aware. There are tons of characters that pop up (mostly bad guys). And Batman and Superman have a decent amount of one-liners poking fun at themselves. This could have been a great movie. But a handful of things definitely hold it back.

Bought this for $8.25. This is an early DC animation feature from the DC Premiere line. It is worth watching. But it's not in the top half of DC animated films.
