Brown is one of the very few to field a vast "Game of Thrones" roll of characters...and to carry it off superbly. Each person stands up and is believable within the confines of the book. Okay, you could argue that some of the secondaries are a bit stereotyped, but in a zomb apoc I believe people's characters would revert to their basic attributes - shorn and delayered of their socialized Ego components - so it pretty much works just fine.
I'm a great fan of Mad Max feral humanity bursting to the surface in all its fetid horror when the thin skin of pretty-please civilization is skimmed off. Wow! Does Brown deliver on that score. So much so that the zeds are often knocked down to being grizzly bears in the woods: dangerous but avoidable. Instead, it's the sickos and nutters who are the real and present risk to pink and pleasant survivors clinging to their loops and tatters of decent behaviour.
Women are placed a risk big time but their abuse (and the soft lime sex) have tasteful veils drawn - there's sufficient to let your imagination fill in the details. In this setting, a highly commendable approach for to do otherwise would be gratuitous and distracting.
In sum, no question TW Brown is a genre master and polished wordsmith who gives full value for money. I'm hooked and have committed to working through the series. Bravo!
Minor quibble: a few tiny typos and transliterated words (e.g. breaks --- brakes). Not in any way serious. For noting only.
This book follows the first book perfectly. The style of writing is such that before you have a chance to get tired of one group of people you are led to the next group, the characters are so important to each of their roles that they become very real. I also like the way the characters are not just killing zombies all of the time, they know that they have to find places to settle & start their new futures. The battles are not just zombies killing people & people killing zombies or bad guys, some of the fights are carefully thought out attacks. I hope I am able to give this series the justice it deserves in my reviews due to my getting in so deep that the whole first 7 books blend together into the whole story. I cant say I regret it, I enjoyed myself WAY too much for any regrets. You will not regret getting the books in this series, the author also has 1 book out that in the first 3 books together plus I believe he said 10,000 more words! Read this book and get a vacation from your life like I did.
