In particular for authors, designers, or other generators of intellectual property, Jeff poses a challenging question, namely: How deeply do we grasp the complex systems we work within? And if we have truly second and even third order mastery over complex system dynamics, how good is our ability to articulate those insights to others? This is a book for re engineering aficionados in every domain. Timothy Noonan, author of Someday Rich: Creating Sustainable Tomorrows Today from John Wiley & Sons
Putting the client at the center of our professional practice is not a new concept, but it seems to me that practicing it is still uncommon. This is not surprising: we have a centuries-old tradition of professionalization (different form professionalism, the author points out early in the book.) Being part of a profession with a specialized body of knowledge, world-view and language has many advantages, but it is worthwhile to make sure that that power is used in the best interest of our clients; and that is not an automatic process (as we may wish to think.)
The author exhorts us, with good reasons, to be client-centered professionals and he provides a number of tools for being efficient and effective at that. These tools are very important because if we change our professional practice but are not efficient we will resent it, and if we are not effective then it will not be worth it.
The approaches described by Jeff Belkora have been developed by him over twenty years of helping breast cancer patients to make better decisions, interact productively with health care professionals and better cope with the multi-dimensional hardship of having cancer. The book includes many examples derived from that practice, examples from consumer financial services and a few ones from other areas, but the concepts and methods are applicable to any area where professionals attempt to help clients directly.
DEAL! is easy to read but transforming ourselves into (more) client-centered professionals will likely require paying careful attention to the concepts, adapting the tools to our own profession and context, and continue trying until we get it right. To decide if that is a worthy path to follow you may start by reading the preface of the book and the executive summary, both available as free pdf files at http://www.jeffbelkora.com/deal-book/
Then, of course, the book is a roadmap to, as the author puts it, "guide your clients to good decisions."
I have used these decision tools both for myself and with patients. I have seen first-hand their effectiveness while making stressful and complicated career and medical decisions. I say with enthusiasm that DEAL! and the strategies it emphasizes will be a valuable resource throughout my future healthcare career.
These tools are presented alongside examples and exercises to take these strategies immediately into use for your own personal decisions and to use with family, clients, colleagues, etc.. DEAL! further explains principles for creating a team and/or program to integrate these methods into an already existing business or practice. If you are a professional (physician, social worker, lawyer, financial advisor, etc.) who is looking to create a more client-centered practice or business, this is the book for you.
