I have first-hand experience implementing his tools in both the Patient Support Corps (as his undergraduate research apprentice) as well as in my own career. His strategies for critical thinking helped me work through conflicts with colleagues. After using SCOPED at a forked road in my career path, I felt more confident and empowered that my decision was the right thing.
I would recommend this book to any professional seeking more effective, collaborative, and productive relationships with clients as well as to curious individuals who might be seeking guidance on how to think through all of life’s decisions.
The ideas and strategies outlined in DEAL! make it an indispensable resource for professionals. Equally deserving of praise, however, is Jeff Belkora’s ability to communicate the client centered approach in a manner that is clear, concise, and accessible to the reader. DEAL! does an excellent job of unpacking richly loaded concepts, distilling out the core elements and issues, and explaining them in a way that is executable and reproducible. DEAL! provides an impressive model that will benefit both clients and professionals, and Jeff Belkora’s abilities as a communicator and educator serve the reader well.
The book presents a coordinated framework for client-centered decision-making supported by compelling vignettes from live implementation, easy-to-remember acronyms, and useful checklists to ensure quality and completeness. For example, the Five S’s provide a particularly effective method for understanding the multiple dimensions of any difficult decision. Science figures in, as it should, but not to the exclusion of the other important, human-centered aspects – for example, spiritual and social dimensions, which are too frequently soft-pedaled or altogether airbrushed out of other manuscripts on decision-making.
Belkora is to be commended for sharing techniques and well-considered recommendations in this clear, engaging text. The book is a must-read for any practitioner authentically committed to helping clients, colleagues, and customers make better decisions across multiple practice areas.
