Unfortunately it did not take long to find a pretty catastrophic issue with the Gammaxx 400. It's base (which looks to have been milled flat) featured a thin ribbon of irregular metal shavings where the aluminum section wraps around the heat pipes. With a metal pick I was pretty easily able to dislodge some of these, which is quite frankly terrifying for something that is intended to go inside of a computer. Back to Amazon it goes!
Hard to tell if this is a one-off, however close inspection of the product images on the Deep Cool website does show a bit of roughness along the edges of the heatpipes there too... Thankfully the Cooler Master Hyper 212 had no such problem, with it's based sanded nice and smooth (no milling marks or shavings visible here). The Hyper 212 also arrived in vastly better packaging, included a proper instruction booklet, and appeared to have a few more full length fins (ie more surface area).
All things considered, even without the metal shavings, the Hyper 212 appears to represent better value at this price point. Note that coolers were true to size at 154.5mm (Gammaxx 400) and 160mm (Hyper 212) - this was my original reason for purchasing both as my case spec'ed a maximum cooler height of 155mm. Luckily both ended up fitting.
So i actually wanted to water cool, but couldn't without a new case. I then turned to air coolers. After much reading in Tom's, and other websites i was attracted to this one. As i write this, i am at 36°C. I am more than happy at the efficiency i gained with this cooler.
Best $26 i have spent on cooling. Definitely recommend!! Numbers speak for themselves:
Before (stock cooler)
Light use: ~58°C
Prime95 stress test: ~82°C first few mins, then creeps to 92°C after 10 mins
Deepcool Gammaxx 400
Light use: ~37°C
Prime95 stress test: ~62°C first few mins, then slowly creeps to 70°C after 25 mins
Height on the website is stated as 5.7inches, but when you include the height of the heatpipes mine was a touch over 6inches, which is just enough to not fit in my machine.
The cheap aluminum fins of the heatsink also put a nice cut right in my thumb while i was attempting to install.
If the cut doesnt represent the quality of the aluminum fins you can also see a few of them in the image are mildly bent, they'd probably bend if you looked at them wrong.
Overall the huge amount of positive reviews was misleading, you get what you get at this price range.
If you do decide to go through with it, be sure to get your CPU nice and toasty (to soften up the paste) right before removing the old heat sink. Otherwise the old thermal paste will glue your cpu and heat sink together and you'll end up ripping your cpu out of the socket likely bending a few pins or worse. Also, be sure to fully read through the directions on the outside of the box so you don't end up like me, making incorrect assumptions regarding the install. These two tips will save you much time and frustration, trust me.
4 Stars - Value & performance are great! I would never recommend this unit to an amateur builder though because the installation process was such a pain in the backside! A slightly different blueprint could have made the install process much easier imho. Keep in mind you'll have much less space to work with in your chassis once you replace the stock cooler with this beast as well.
To be honest, I would only recommend this unit to someone installing it in a new system build. Installing this on a motherboard that's already been mounted in the case is just stupid hard and kinda frustrating.

Decided to take the chance based on all the reviews out there on youtube about this cooler, and I couldnt be happier. I was a pain in the *** to install because my system was already put together. I honestly felt like I was going to break my mobo when putting it on, but I didnt and all is well.
I OC'd my CPU up to 4.2GHz and it runs @ 42C under 100% load when gaming. The fan isnt loud... I stream games and you cannot hear the fan in any videos, and the PC is literally RIGHT next to my mic.
The thing is a monster... it hardly fits in my Phanteks p400 tempered glass case... there is probably a 1/8th of an inch of space to spare. Lucky!
If you have any doubts, Dont. just get it.

I bought this to cool a Ryzen 1600. I had a nice OC using the Wraith Spire but I was maxing out the TDP for that cooler. On full load I would hit about 80C using the Spire.
I purchased the Gammaxx 400 and had no problems installing it. It was quite easy, actually. I used Arctic MX-4 rather than the provided TIM. My 1600, which used to run at 80+C 100% usage now has trouble going over 60C. I ran Folding@Home for 6 hours with HWMonitor recording my temps, and the max temp I hit was 59C. Ran Prime95 and steady-state temp was 60C. With a custom fan curve the fan doesn't go over 75% while cooling at max load and during normal usage is inaudible in an office-like background noise level.
BIG TIP ON MAKING INSTALLATION EASIER ON AM4:
When screwing in the AMD clip-on cooler mounts only thread the screws two or three times into the backplate. This extra height allows you to attach the cooler by hooking the smaller mounting bracket in first, and then the larger one. The intense downward force required to install the cooler when the AMD clip-on cooler mounts are fully threaded in is avoided as once you have "hooked" the cooler in (and applied TIM ofc) with the screws partially threaded the remaining slack is removed by fully threading in the screws into the backplate. Leave a comment if you have any questions.
Ryzen 5 1600 OCed to 3.8GHz all-core 1.344v
With my stock cooler, I'd hit between 60-80 constantly under stress, but this cooler sits me between 30-55 basically at ALL TIMES. There is no reason to get an expensive cpu cooler if you just want one that's amazing for cooling.
Over the course of events this pc has been roughed over a bit and ever slowly the old cpu cooler was slowly failing, and also misdiagnosed.
This GAMMAXX solves so many problems from poor gpu performances ( as cores, unseen, would shutdown, and grfx and response times slowly ebbed away.)
Now!, I play all extreme grfx on 8gb radeon and 24gb mains and the mobo back plate is barely warm :)
PS I had to disconnect plugs and remove memory to get my fingers in there. and am running hot games to make sure the whole rig is seated and sealed in?
Great value great performances . . . 11 yrs and still able to upgrade this rig :)
