This was my first laptop. I am a programmer and have always used desktops. I'm writing this review on a desktop. However, I recently started freelancing and needed my own laptop to work remote. I've had Dell computers in the past (going back 25 some years) and their customer service is pretty shoddy and their products are hit or miss (I use mostly Dell monitors though). I thought about getting a MacBook but I hate paying the apple tax and I hate OSX. Plus knowing Ubuntu on Windows was about to be released I figured getting a Windows laptop would work out fine.
So the pros: The screen on this thing is gorgeous (if you get the 4k screen) It actually has made my 27" 1440p monitor look bad. The entire laptop looks slick and is very light. The keyboard feels good. I updated to the latest bios and the only issue I had was the screen flicker (only on battery) but that eventually went away with a BIOS update.
Cons, I've had problems getting non 4k monitors to work at their native resolution when using them as external monitors. I haven't had a way to connect it to the USB C port, only with HDMI. I haven't had enough time to look into it to try and figure it out but know that could be an issue. I wish it had a displayport instead of HDMI.
The samsung SM 951 ssd that came with it isn't the greatest but it'll do.
I don't really use the trackpad because no matter what the windows settings I put it on to disable the trackpad during typing it never is disabled or delayed so my cursor moves all over while typing. I'm not sure if this is a Windows issue or an issue with the hardware itself but my solution has been to disable the trackpad and use a mouse. This works most of the time but there are times where I need to have the laptop well, in my lap and there is nowhere to use a mouse and it's frustrating.
The worst thing about it is the webcam. It's placed on the bottom so it makes video conferencing basically impossible because all the person sees is your fingers. Now, I'm assuming this was a design decision because of the tiny bezel. However, Dell could have made the top bezel just a tad bit taller and left the sides as narrow as they are) kind of like how apple did with the brand new macbook. If you don't video conference then this isn't an issue but now that I've been freelancing I'm in way more google hangout video chats than ever before so it's become a pain point.
Now, this was by far the most expensive thing I have purchased on Amazon and their customer service actually failed me pretty badly. The day after I bought the computer I found it for $100 cheaper on Microsoft's site, so I emailed the seller (not Amazon) if they would do a price match, or if not what my return options were. They never replied. So then I tried to talk to Amazon and they sent a message for me to the seller who still never replied. So I left feedback for the seller indicating how there was no response from them. They immediately replied to this and told me they would honor the price match. So I emailed back asking for details and they never replied to that. However, my review had been REMOVED from their page and I no longer could leave another review for that seller. So I contacted Amazon to see how to get the price match honored and they basically told me they couldn't help me. I also asked why my review was removed and they avoided the question. Eventually after 3 days of complaining an amazon representative finally gave me $30 amazon credit (random) The reason I felt comfortable making such a large purchase is because I was buying it on Amazon but if the seller isn't Amazon they basically don't care short of the product not being delivered to you. My only negative buying experience in 15 years on Amazon (and of course for the most expensive thing) I'm guessing the seller pointed to their email of offering to match the price match to get Amazon to remove the review without actually going through with their offer. It's pretty sketch that Amazon refused to explain to me why my feedback was removed.
