I resonated with these books as a series for several notable reasons: each story stood alone on its own merits, yet there was continuity between them—one or more teens introduced in a previous book always took center stage in the next. I found the swirl of interplay between new characters and those from previous books to be intricately well-blended and dynamic. Brodey crafted each scene so well, capturing the essence of her characters’ personalities as they impacted one another.
The dominant theme that wrapped around all others was communication: characters faced daunting challenges and had to move beyond their comfort zones in order to have candid conversations with each other. Brodey’s dialogues were superb in the way they showcased the depth within these interactions.
Because the series covers a span of six years in the lives of her teen characters, I resonated with an underlying quality of dynamism that carried over from story to story. Each book contains its own secrets to be revealed, influences from a diversity of paranormal elements to excite, and unusual talents held by characters to impact the resolution of mysteries. This is a young adult series I’ll read again at some point. No doubt, I’ll gain some new perspectives.
The characters come to life and you feel like your part of their 'friend' circle. I'm thoroughly impressed that Lisette Brodey is able to capture contemporary situations and teen dialog in her writing. She explores issues vexing us and does so through dialog and action with no preaching.
I was drawn along and immersed in the drama, suspense, and absolutely enchanting mix of paranormal experiences. I won't spoil the mysteries but will only say I laughed, I cried, had lumps in my throat, and cheered the victories of the friends I made reading the books. I will say Avalon is my bestie.
The Desert Series is going to be on my shopping list for my grandkids!
Wish I had more than two thumbs so I could give lots of thumbs up! Highly recommend you read these books.
In MYSTICAL HIGH, we meet Jessie and Jinxsy, high school students and best friends, Jessie’s brother River, their teachers and parents. The youngsters’ families are in turmoil and on top of it, strange and threatening things are happening in the community. Their friendship and the support of caring adults help them in their struggle with their own feelings and the adversities they face at home and in school.
In DESERT STAR, the elements of racism and sexual orientation play an important role. Larsen Davis, a very talented gay African American student, struggles with prejudices from his piers and, what’s even more painful, his alcoholic mother refuses to accept his sexual orientation. Fortunately, he finds love and compassion among his friends and a caring woman who takes him in.
In the last book of the series, DRAWN APART, the young people have to deal with a new challenge, the accident and serious illness of a close friend and the uncertainty if she will survive or not. Death and what it means bring heartache but also hope to the community.
The stories are beautifully told, heart-wrenching at times, but also heartwarming. The young people share the typical teen slang, but each one has his or her own personality and idiosyncrasies. What I also enjoyed is the way the supernatural elements are so well woven into the stories that they appear “natural.” Whether you believe in ghosts and the afterlife or not, in these stories you are ready to submit to a “willing suspension of disbelief.” Great books by a talented author.
