Great quality sander that has held up well!
I bought this to use when making my own furniture. I don't like buying cheap tools that I have to later replace and in this instance, the DEWALT brand was priced fairly well. I've made several pieces with this sander and have no complaints. While the bag doesn't catch every bit of dust, it catches a lot and it is impractical to think that any sander will be a completely clean operation.

    This is a well-designed, well-engineered sander that is easy to use, effective, and relatively clean. For home use, including floors, furniture, cabinetry, decks, etc., this guy will do the job. It's a workhorse, will keep on running after extended heavy use. But the dust bag is the star feature. I wouldn't even think of doing any home sanding without the dust bag attached to the sander. If you run a sander without the dust bag, the resulting wood dust is the mess from hell. A thick layer of wood dust covers EVERYTHING in the area, and I mean everything. And that's just the grosser dust, the super-fine dust is even worse. Not healthy to breathe, and a pain to clean up after. I was surprised how much sanding you can do before the bag fills up. The dust bag is easy to remove and re-attach. As far as the sandpaper itself, you buy the sandpaper pre-cut to fit the sander head, and it just fits right on with no muss or clamps or anything. I've heard people say that an orbital sander obscures the grain of the wood. I didn't find that to be true for this sander, quite the opposite. It paid for itself on my first project, which was sanding off the old finish on my kitchen cabinets. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a good home sander.

    I have a 25 foot sailboat and needed to sand off at least 1/16 to 1/8 inches of hard bottom paint off the hull.

    The total bottom area is about 450 sq. ft. and I had to work twisted over and upside down most of the time. Sanding both convex and concave curves (a sailboat bottom ain't flat!) I went through about 200 sanding disks of varying grits.

    Despite all the incredibly fine dust and four six-hour days of work, this Dewalt was a champ. Relatively light and very well-balanced to hold, it made the worst job I ever had to do much easier. I thought the fine dust from the paint would kill the motor, but no problems!

    Changing the velcro sanding discs was incredibly easy and fast.

    Only two small complaints and a warning:
    1- The dust bag is really useless for anything but the smallest jobs. (Just look at the photo: You expected to hear that, right?)
    2- The outlet doesn't connect to a standard Shop Vac hose. I had to buy an adapter to connect to the ShopVac hose. No big deal, but still it's not ready to roll out of the box.

    The warning:
    This thing is very LOUD. Don't even think of using it without some sort of hearing protection.

    A serious tool for serious work.

    Amazing Sander for pretty much everything for the first 18 months. Then it game me a small shock one day. I turned it off, check the plug, etc, and turned it back on. The next shock was NOT small, nearly knocked me off of my feet. There is 3rd prong on this tool, so buyer beware. This item(or at least the one I purchased) is not a long term investment.

    I had some light sanding I needed to do and this did a great job. Plenty of power and the dust collection bag works well. But there were a few quirks that kept it from getting 5 stars that may or may not bother you ...

    * Collection bag is hard to get on and off. It stays on with a tight fit over a rubber gasket. That is going to wear out I think over the years.
    * The handle is very big and bulky. It works okay for a guys hands but would probably not do well with smaller hands.
    * The bag that it comes with is nice and well made but there is no extra room in it once the sander and collector are in. So if you plan on keeping your sanding discs there (which would be a natural), no room.

    Still for the money, plenty of power and well made.

    The sander works well and has typical DeWalt quality in build. However, the vibration is excessive in my opinion. I've used other oscillating sanders that produce a lot less feedback for the user. This thing creates some serious feedback that gave my friend hives when he used it.

    The built in vacuum is my favorite feature, and works really well at picking up debris, even dust-size paint particles. You should still use a face mask if you're sanding anything other than wood, but the vacuum drastically cuts down on air born debris.

    I have been restoring automobiles for over 25 years. I do a lot of sanding of old, nasty finishes to prepare the car for fresh paint. I use an air sander, powered by a big noisy air compressor. Recently my compressor wore out, and rather than spend $1100 on a new one, I thought to myself, Hmmm...Why not find an electric that would do the same thing! I found this sander, and installed a PSA pad adapter, "DEWALT DW4385 5-Inch PSA Pad, Medium (Fits the DW422)" and picked up right where I left off! I completed my first job with it, a repaint on a 1995 S-10 pickup, and this little guy preformed flawlessly! It allowed me to use the paper that normally goes on my air sander, and I don't miss a beat now. I would recommend this sander to anyone serious about refinishing wood, or metal, using PSA paper. PSA paper is less expensive than the velcro-backed stuff. It is available where auto body supplies are sold. Check your yellow pages under auto body supplies for the PSA 5" paper. This works great!
