I would recommend one to purchase it only if you already have a wide array of Dewalt 18 volts tools and a number of batteries. In this case, you can have several charged batteries always at hand. One can live with its fairly heavy weight. It does its job.
If you do not have other 18 volt Dewalt tools, pass on this drill, do yourself a favor and buy a modern 20 volts tool with Li-Ion battery. It will be much lighter, the battery life will be much longer, and it will be more fun to use in all respects.
It is a good tool, but it is a very old technology. No value to buy it today unless you have a good reason.
I had one since 2006. I worked well for me for over 10 years and lasted through a full home remodelling project. Recently, the motor started smoking. I bought a replacement bare tool on the auction site since I have a number of Dewalt 18 volt tools, all from mid-2000. I also have a small Festool drill which beats this one by a huge margin in terms of lower weight, longer battery life, comfort, and even torque. There is no comparison. But Festool is pricey and I take good care of it, use it for fine clean work. This one - I am not worried if it gets dirty. It is cheap and it is hard to break.
I also used to have a Ryobi corded drill. That one was not worth owning.
Dewalt is a solid middle ground in terms of quality and cost.
So far, it works great and charges fast. The bag is perfect, so much better than trying to fit everything perfectly into those clunky plastic cases
I love that this drill has so many additional add-on components you can also purchase to turn the drill into an electric saw, etc.
I am an occasional user (only for high torque needs like screws in tough material or masonry screws). I use my Makita 18V for most work.
Tried it and found it to be very noisy (compared to old DeWalt and Makita). Sounds like the gears are grinding. The NiCad batteries do not bother me - the DeWalt one hour charge is OK. The unit is certainly compact. Giving it a 3-star until I find out if the gears are OK.
