In the driveway it's been fantastic as well, though there I only use it for the odd lawn clippings and such. If you're looking for a blower to do basic yard cleanup, I'd say this is the one that you're looking for. Great battery life, plenty of velocity, and at the end of the day you won't smell like 2 cycle gas which is a huge bonus.
Purchased this item in DEC 2015 and used it periodically perhaps 12 times until OCT 2016, which is when it followed the other defective Dewalt 40 Volt blowers by failing to run, but instead, give off a high pitched noise and refuse to blow air. Appears to be a common complaint in this forum. I waited a few hours and installed a fresh battery with the same outcome, a high pitched noise coming from the motor area. Very disappointed in Dewalt, they have a potential recall going here or should if they cared about customer satisfaction. Hate paying more money in repairs or shipping to help a company fix a QC issue.
UPDATE: Sept 18, 2016
The Dewalt service department gave me a prepaid return label and also shipped out a new replacement blower at no cost to me. I received the replacement blower a couple days ago. This is good service without question. The replacement blower works just fine, but so did the original blower initially. No comment was made by the Dewalt service department as to what the defect is. Perhaps Dewalt modified this blower, if so then I just hope this works out for us customers and Dewalt too. If this replacement blower fails then I will be back to comment on it.
Of the two battery capacities available, this review is for the largest capacity 6AH version.
I am happy with this blower, but I am not sure I got my $370 worth from it. If it was $100 cheaper, I would give it 5 stars. Note the price did come down after Christmas 2015. I have many other cordless DeWalt hand tools (not yard tools), and I understand they are a commercial grade, premium brand, but even if this blower was $270 with the big battery pack, I would still consider that high.
Don't get me wrong, this is the best cordless blower on the market currently in terms of air flow and results. I researched cordless blowers before purchasing. As far as battery powered blowers go, this one will make you the most happy. But the analogy that best fits here is that this is kind of like getting a 5-star crash rating on a Mazda Miata. Sure its crash rating is the best amongst its peers (tiny cars), but overall it is not nearly as safe in a crash as a large SUV in absolute terms. Plug-in blowers or gas blowers are the SUVs in that analogy. So go into this with eyes wide open and with the appropriate expectations and you will be happy with the performance.
The one thing I am extremely satisfied with is the improved overall task experience. This is why we all want a battery powered blower. It takes only seconds to pick up the blower in the garage, snap in a battery and start blowing off an area. It's perfect for small tasks where the actual blowing takes less time than unrolling a power cable and then rolling it back up, especially if the task at hand is a good distance from a power plug.
The DCBL790H1 works well for the specific reason I got it which was to frequently blow off a covered outdoor porch wrapping around my house and to blow off my garage and driveway. I love not having to be tethered to a cord nor roll a cord up when done. I'm 6'1, so this blower's weight is not an issue to me. I can operate it with one hand easily. I used it once to blow dry leaves off my yard and was sufficiently satisfied. After about 30 minutes, the battery was nearly depleted. Other reviewers have stated that cordless blowers don't work that well on wet leaves. From my experience with the dry leaves, I would expect the same trouble on wet leaves with this blower. Although you can vary the blowing speed, in practice, I almost always pull the trigger all the way for max air flow (and least run time).
One thing other reviewers have brought up is that the air tube is the same full diameter from the output of the fan to the exit of the short tube. I plan to experiment with putting some fitting on the end to see if compressing the air flow improves performance. Sounds like a good 3D printing challenge or maybe an opportunity to do a little McGyver-ing.
UPDATE: March 19th, 2017. Do not buy this model. I purchased the unit 15 months ago and it is now useless. Like too many other reviews, it now makes the same high pitched noise while not blowing any air. Once it started making the noise, it degraded rapidly. Sometimes, I could let it sit overnight and have a few minutes of use of it the next day, but not any more. This thing is just a flawed design. I bought it when it first came out and was priced considerably more than it is now. Being out of warranty, I am stuck with trying to decide whether it is worth spending more money to get it repaired by DeWalt or to sell off the good 6AH battery for $170.
