+ Drill is light in weight, so much so that I thought it felt a bit "cheap" at first. However being light avoids fatigue.
+ Drill is a hammer drill so you can use it for masonry/concrete.
+ Seems durable enough. I have accidentally dropped this from about 3 feet onto tile - I was sure I broke it (the battery pack came out in the fall) but it was still working. (The fall did slightly ding the metal chuck though but everything works fine)
+ This drill has a place for storing a philips/flathead bit (included with the drill). This is the one feature every drill should have, but many drills do not. I would not buy a drill that didn't have such a bit holder as i don't like losing bits!
+ Batteries (2) are Li-Ion, which help account for the light weight. Li-ions also retain charge better than older Nicads (slower rate of self discharge) so the battery should actually work when you need to use the drill. With older Nicad drills many times I have picked up a drill only to find that it's dead.
+ Charger is a "smart" multi-voltage charger which can charge various Dewalt battery packs, which is a plus if you have other Dewalt cordless tools.
+ The accessory bit set is a nice touch, and it fits inside the drill travel case (along with the drill and 2 batteries). The bit set has many #2 philips & robertson(square) tips, including 2 long tips for those hard-to-reach places.
+ As is standard with modern drills there is a single white LED light to illuminate during operation. It probably wouldn't replace a flashlight in dark areas though.
- I wish the battery packs had a "charge level" indicator on them.Read more ›
The drill does not come with an accompanying stabilizing handle. This is mostly used for hammer drilling and clamps to the shank behind the drill bit. Thankfully my old handle fits.
Li-ion batteries are much better than NiMH. Faster charge, lighter, and their lifetimes are longer.
I have not been disappointed. So far this drill has met all my expectations for household duty. It's zippy and responsive, and always seems ready to go. I use it for drilling wood, some drilling in metal, and for quantity screw driving, as in deck work. It's been great on each job. The battery has proven itself to hold a charge, even when in storage. The variable speed has been perfect for screw driving. It has adequate torque to drive long screws deep into pressure treated board. The weight and balance has been fine for me. And it seems to be a little quieter than them cord-powered drill.
Changing bits is a breeze with the easy-to-use chuck. Simple to do on the fly.
I'd recommend this drill set to anyone doing handyman jobs around the house. All the power I need, and without the inconvenience of a cord, or need for proximity to a power socket.
I read other reviews mentioning a grinding, crunching sound every time the drill stopped spinning.
I also noticed the sound, but thought it was just a noisy clutching mechanism. But after only light use, the shaft lock ground itself out, so now the shaft spins easily when the drill is off, making it majorly inconvenience to release, or tighten the chuck.
The only way to change bits now is pull the trigger, and twist against the toque of the motor
(Note- i bought this drill 2011 because it was on sale for a good price, but i only used it occasionally as a back-up drill until about a month ago. I'd been pretty happy with it before the shaft lock ground itself out. Now its just annoying.)
