Strength and speed
The hammer drill’s high-power, high-efficiency motor delivers 350 unit watts out of maximum power for superior performance in light and medium drilling applications. A 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck with carbide inserts provides superior bit-gripping strength—reducing slippage during high-torque applications—thus providing longer tool life. The hammer drill/driver’s two-speed (0-600 RPM and 0-2,000 RPM) transmission allows users to select the appropriate speed for the job at hand and is up to 30 percent faster than current hammer drill/drivers on the market.
Comfort and convenience
The compact hammer drill’s design incorporates a slim handle with contoured grip that extends user comfort during long jobs, and DEWALT’s engineering and design team adjusted the product footprint and weight allocation for ideal balance and a lightweight feel, making the 3.5-pound tool easy to maneuver in tight areas. The bright built-in LED work light above the trigger has a 20-second delay that improves visibility in dimly lit spaces.
20V MAX battery platform
DEWALT-designed electronics have been built into the DCD785C2’s switch to provide maximum life for the tool and battery by helping to protect them from overheating, overloading, and deep discharge during use. The 20V’s lithium-ion batteries provide up to 35 percent more runtime than existing 18V lithium-ion battery technology. The included charger has dual voltage capabilities, and it is compatible with both 12V MAX and 20V MAX DEWALT lithium-ion batteries; the DCD785C2 is also compatible with the 3.0 Ah lithium-ion batters that are available as replacement packs or come with the premium tools.

Before I go on, you should know that I considered buying Bosch, Makita and Milwaukee, but ended up with Dewalt, again, high reviews. Anyway, as soon as I opened the box, wow, this is one sexy looking beast, aesthetically, the drill is eye pleasing, well designed, and slick, something about that yellow and black...continuing, the drill is light, but still fills your hand with confidence, it's not as heavy as the 985, but it's not too light either, it's just well balanced. I like the batteries, I couldn't believe how thin these things are and the power they pumped into the drill; it is an acomplishment by Dewalt. Charging was a breeze, simply plug the charger, place the battery on it, light flashes read, goes off, you're ready to drill/drive.
The drill has a belt hook, which can be swaped to have on either the left or right side; it also has a drill-bit holder which I didn't really use, but I'm sure will be useful to others.
Two speeds, 13 drive settings plus one for drilling and one for hammer drill; keyless chuck, what more can you ask. Some will find the 985 better suited to their needs (3 speeds), I personally liked the convenience of having "less" to learn and more to drill.
Now, performance...wholy crap this little dude has some cojones! as soon as I slid that battery into the drill, the first thing I did was press that trigger and what a shock it was...it was like a fighter jet taking off, it literally made me feel powerful, I thought this thing could tear down the house and put it back together. Of course, I went ahead and started drilling, driving, basically doing all sorts of crazy things to test this little beast. I was happy to see its power and I was happy to see that my $200 investment had paid off. I couldn't see a problem, I was blinded by the sheer souding power.
I drilled about 20+ holes into a 2x4 (for no apearent reason)and the drill had plenty of juice to go.
So after drilling and drooling like an idiot, my wife finally nagged me to actually start the house project for which I had an excuse to buy this drill :)
so there I am, drilling away and time to drive in some screws came...that's when my heart broke...my wife could leave me any day now for a female lover and it still wouldn't compare to what I felt that day... having this cute, sexy powerful little beast disappoint me like that...it was heart breaking...
Chuck wobble, a fact that I chose to ignore from negative reviews, but sadly a reality about this drill. At first, being the dreamer that I am, thought that it was all in my head, I kept on going, but as I went further, I realized, it was chuck wobble and getting worse for that matter, is that even possible? I could barely notice it, but by the time I had decided to return my little beast, the wobble was bad. I couldn't drive screws in with precission. I had to keep more pressure and the whole experience deteriorated. So back it went, and to be honest, I guess I could've lived with it (ignore it I mean), but at $200, it was not acceptable. I've been a supporter of Dewalt products for a very long time, but this time I have to say, Dewalt has really dropped the ball. I don't know if it is an issue specific to this model, but from what I've heard, a lot of people have had the same problem. It maybe a manufacturing deffect or quality control issues, I don't care; this is simply not acceptable.
So there it is, my short, sweet and sad experience with Dewalt. As of now, I'm back to my old $60 B&D drill, which ironically has no chuck wobble at all. Do yourself a favor, don't get too excited and just read the "positive, raving reviews", take the negatives in as well, like I should've, analyze them and go from there. Look at and study your options. Hope this helps.
THINGS I LIKE
Chuck grips very tightly
Plenty of power and torque for my needs
Excellent clutch system that works well
Overall balance and ergonomics
Even the 1.5 amp battery lasts longer than I expected
THINGS I WOULD CHANGE
The LED light is helpful but could be better positioned
Not much else as this is a nice drill!
