I had seen this grinder but didn't think much of it till I stumbled on some YouTube video reviews of it. I was hooked...I always have 3 grinders; one dedicated to grinding/flap wheels, one to cup and stinger brushes and one to cut off wheels. It's efficient but cords are problematic...always! I was enthusiastic about a cordless grinder with the power of a corded grinder...so much that I almost bought 2 right off, but calmed down and decided to "try" 1 first.
The good - I ran a cut off wheel, bonded wheel, flap wheel, a knotted cup and stringer brush on a fully charged battery. Power and torque is spot on with my corded 13 amp grinders...it didn't bog down at all and ran noticeably quieter than the corded brothers. I was especially surprised with knotted brushes. The weight of the battery feels moderately awkward when holding the grinder, but when i put it to metal I didnt notice it all and it felt balanced. The brake is a feature none of my other grinders have and I like it...you don't have to stop it or wait to put it down. The brake is advertised to help with binding while cutting, but I didn't have any issues binding when I was cutting and didn't try to induce a bind.
The less than good - it has a trigger with a safety, but the trigger aligns with my middle finger (similar to the paddle design). My instinct is to use my "trigger finger" which places the back of my hand off the handle and onto the battery housing. I can operate the safety and trigger with my middle finger but it is awkward and will be a learning curve. I also prefer a support handle with rubber grip...this one is hard plastic like any of the cheapest grinders...it's somewhat petty but I can feel the diffence especially when using a stringer brush and the grinder is trying to run away...based on cost I expect the better handle. Lastly, the arbor nut has some flimsy tin that aligns with the key way on the arbor. I'm not even sure what that's about...possible a fixed washer or something...I don't like it, but since I use 5/8-11 hubbed wheels 98% of the time it won't matter.
Overall...I like it...a lot! I can't speak to battery life yet, but I anticipate with 2 it won't be an issue and definitely a positive trade off for a cord. I'll buy another one with batteries but might wait until I let the smoke out of one of the corded grinders. its a big chunk of change for a grinder.
I have come to depend on good reviews and hope this one helps.
That one little gripe aside, it's in a class of its own as a battery operated grinder. The brake works quickly and the machine itself is a lot more quiet than the smaller plug-in one that did come with a wrench. Moving the guard with the little lever can be done with gloves on, and even the weight of the large flexvolt battery is nice for controlling angles/pressure on the wheel. Grinding bolts off of a recycled piece of steel, I quickly settled into a technique using the guard as a fulcrum that could sheer them off while barely touching the workpiece. Generally speaking I'm not very coordinated so I'd have to credit the tool design for that.
The Dual-stage trigger is intuitive and doesn't slow you down at all. If you're holding it properly it just works. I was glad to see it's pretty hard to turn the tool on accidentally by setting it down or reaching to pick it up.
One of the best tools I have purchased.
Quiet, powerful and extremely capable and versatile with other tools that use the same batteries. Another great DeWalt cordless tool!
He got this one, his first cordless, and was skeptical. He used it to cut up some 1" steel square tube and his response was "This thing is wicked awesome". This coming from a man who is not known to use adjectives or praise tools made overseas. Translation - 5 star tool.
