Only taking one star off because it was an easy fix, and I appreciated how easy it was to get at the gubbins inside (just a bunch of T20 screws).
Hoping for the best, with my Stihl gasoline powered hedge trimmer getting to be too heavy and my electric powered Black+Decker trimmer about worn out, I ordered this DEWALT 22-inch hedge trimmer and eagerly put it to the test. Darn! Based on the power delivered by my sawzall I expected a similar performance out of their hedge trimmer. Sadly it seemed to function at a much lower speed probably because the 22-inch blade must require more power than moving a 12-inch blade in the reciprocating saw.
It is very lightweight and has great ergonomics and balance BUT it doesn't deliver the cutting power that I was hoping for. The blades are sharp but more effort is required in that the hedges I'm trimming require more than one pass to get the job done. That in effect doubles my workload when comparing it to the gasoline and corded trimmers. The lesser weight of the battery powered unit does mitigate that somewhat but it is still frustrating to have to do it twice.
I will be interested in trying out a 40v unit to see if doubling the battery capability (but increasing the weight) will provide the cutting benefits I was looking for. Trying to keep my tools in the 20V range just isn't going to work Good try DEWALT but this doesn't seem to be enough power for the intended task.
We live in the inland Pac NW region. The blackberry bushes around here will absolutely take over if you don't keep them in check. That was the main purpose for buying this trimmer. I chose the DeWalt because I have several of their cordless tools already and the batteries are compatible.
Right out of the package this thing was ready to go. Add charged battery, remove blade cover, annihilate blackberry bushes. It easily cut through the very tough runners, some over 3/4" thick. Then it was just a matter of raking up the debris and throwing it on the burn pile.
This tool probably isn't the lightest but it's easily manageable. The blades are razor sharp and it's long enough to reach some harder-to-get areas. I ran it for over 40 minutes and didn't notice a decrease in the battery power. Not having an electrical cord gives me the freedom to carry this tool all over the 10 acre property.
The fit and finish of the tool is typically DeWalt...perfect. I started buying the DeWalt cordless stuff 3 or 4 years ago when I found a nice drill/driver on sale and I'm a total convert now. If it's not yellow and black, I don't really want it. Every piece of DeWalt equipment I've bought has performed flawlessly.
Couldn't be happier.
Lightweight yet incredibly effective. One of my new favorite tools. -PH
I will happily admit that using this trimmer made the task fun! I felt free from the cuffs of the cord. The unit isn't at all any heavier than my old corded one. The blades are razor sharp, heavy duty, and simply cut through what I feed it. Additionally, I found it very nice that both layers of blades reciprocate (rather than only one against a stationary set).
To my pleasant surprise, the 5Ah battery is no more heavier than the 20v series batteries that are 4Ah or 3 Ah.
I trimmed with this unit for an hour (cycling on and off of course) and when I was done I had a considerable amount of battery life remaining. I was so impressed!
If you have any doubt, doubt no more. This is one of this items that I am just so incredibly satisfied with. What an absolute perfect addition to my 20v line of DeWalt tools!!!

It doesn't have the power of a gas trimmer but it also doesn't have the weight. As strong as the strongest electric trimmers.
The trigger safety is smart and easy to use. The battery runtime on a 5 amp battery is fantastic.
A lot safer to use than a corded one. Can't cut the cord, trip on it and you can use it on a ladder.
It is slightly heavier than a comparable electric but the convenience far outweighs the very slight increase in weight.
