Plus, the 3.0 Ah lithium-ion battery provides up to 35 percent more runtime versus leading 18-volt lithium-ion tools, which is important in reducing downtime throughout the day. DEWALT-designed electronics have been built into the DCS380’s switch to provide maximum life for the tool and battery by helping to protect them from overheating, overloading, and deep discharge during use. The included charger has dual voltage capabilities, and it is compatible with both 12-volt max and 20-volt max DEWALT lithium-ion batteries.

The chuck itself is a rectangular metal block with 2 slots. This allows the blade to be mounted 4 ways: 2-vertical and 2-sideways positions. Now, the way the slots are cut in the chuck causes the normal vertical position of the blade to be slightly off-center (off-center to the left for right handers) to the center-line of the saw. It didn't bother me or affect use, but may bother some. The front metal shoe is adjusted by pressing the side button. It has 3 positions and extends about 2" in the maximum position.
The saw ships in a heavy duty black plastic case with metal latches and a sturdy plastic handle. It fits the bladeless saw, battery and charger and room for short blades. The 12" pruning blades can fit if placed at an angle.
This saw is priced well for a cordless. But bear in mind the need for additional batteries for continual usage.
Dewalt sent me to a local warrantee shop; (issues with their hours and not open on weekend) fixed the switch. Took weeks. Of course I had to buy another recip in the meantime. Bought Milwaukee. Still use the Dewalt a lot, but for heavy stuff, Milwaukee rules.
I was concerned about power since I'm used to using my 20+ year old corded Milwaukee Sawzall. I've switched to cordless tools for pretty much everything else, but the cordless reciprocating saws I tried in the past just didn't match the power of my trusty corded Milwaukee.
Well, the corded Milwaukee is going to be spending time on the shelf. I'm pleased to report that the 20v lithium battery provides more than enough power. Zips through lumber with embedded nails like a hot knife through butter. Same with metal stock - as long as the blade is sharp and up to the task, the saw hasn't let me down one bit.
The run time varies by what you're doing but I'm averaging about 30 min per charge. You'll want to have at least one more battery at the ready since recharge time is about 40 min. That's my only complaint - the kit should have included 2 batteries instead of just one. It also would have been great if these 20v batteries could be used with the 18v NiCad tools, but I can understand how that would be difficult or impossible to engineer.
The case is plastic but quite sturdy, in usual DeWalt fashion. I do miss the days of metal cases (my Milwaukee has a metal case, but I think they switched to plastic as well in recent years) but plastic has its advantages as well.
Easy to handle, lots of power, decent run time, and solid construction. Can't ask for more than that in any tool. Highly recommend.
