I put it through the ringer for the first season and it still runs and cuts just like it did the very first time I used it no problems whatsoever.
We live on a large property, so when it's time to trim there is always a lot of work to do. I was skeptical about cordless yard machines, but figured the 40V, 6ah battery might give me enough time to finish whatever segments I might choose for the day. I was right. With the singular charge I was able to work until I was ready to take a break anyway, which was just over an hour's trimming, and then I put the battery back on the charger and did some lawn tractor work for the rest of the day. It worked out well for me.
I like the two speed settings, both of which are variable, and I believe the DeWALT operated as advertised. The slower setting was perfect for any grass, even longer clumps, and the fast setting did fair work on the tall, weedy stuff, and I was glad that I could knock down many of the thorny berry plants that keep popping up all over the property. I was surprised that I was able to knock down thicker weeds, but this was done with a little finesse. I would do my usual side-to-side swing, but would take it slower at the thicker growth, nicking the plants with the full line length. Also, I would release the trigger whenever the motor bogged down while working through dense areas, moving the head away for a second and then resuming. This might not be necessary, but I don't like to load electric motors for too long.
As for the fixed trimmer head and solid pole, I have no complaints on this property. We have a gravel driveway so I need no edging. However, it might have been nice if this machine had a split-type pole, so that other heads could be utilized. I would love a pole saw attachment and a brush-cutter blade, which I have on one of my gas machines. I believe this motor and battery would have the guts to do other work.
I did find it a little hard to use for long periods of time. A shoulder strap could really help. Also, it would be good if they could do something to lessen the amount of vibration that it gives off. My hands feel fatigued for a day or two after using this for a long period of time.
Also: The guard is rather smalll. I am covered in plant gunk. Expect to get dirty. It also is awkward for stuff lower to the ground because of battery weight so plan to mow afterwards.
