Top Customer Reviews
I've used the new unit and am very happy with it so far. It does make many projects much easier. There are several other models that Amazon sells from Dewalt. I only own this model, but did find some reviews suggesting that several purchasers have had accuracy concerns on occasion with other Dewalt laser level models. I would advise that you carefully check the accuracy of the unit you receive. I'm happy with my replacement laser level, but give the product four stars for quality control of the initial unit I received. I will update this review if I have any further issues.
The results speak for themselves. I used the DW088K to esure my cross members were level and my pickets were plumb. I attached a photo of the finished job. I never could have acheived that level of precision with just a bubble level.
I utilized an old camera tripod from the thrift store to mount the level. My only complaint is that it is very nearly impossible to see in sunlight. The Dewalt laser glasses help, but I found that working early or later in the day worked much better than mid day.
Overall, no regrets. I am quite pleased with the utility of it.
> Very accurate - less prone to human error than a water level or string level.
> Comes with a nice sturdy plastic case which includes spaces for the batteries. This isn't a device I will use often, so I remove the batteries when it is stored. Unless you're a contractor or use this on a frequent basis, I'd recommend the same.
> The magnetic base is very strong and holds it solidly in place
> Has options for vertical, horizontal, and vertical plus horizontal lines.
> Self leveling which reduces human error or issues when someone bumps your laser while you weren't looking
> Fairly expensive for what it is. Yes you pay more for quality, but this is not a 360 degree unit yet costs almost as much.
> The laser unit doesn't have a transport lock, so it tends to bounce around inside the housing. Will this impact longevity or long-term accuracy?
> There is no possible way you are going to see the laser line on a sunny day. This is essentially the same problem with any red laser unless it is a super expensive high power unit, but still worth noting. It works great indoors and projects a bright well defined line, but outdoors is a different story. If you aren't in an area covered by shade, you may need to wait until early evening to be able to see the lines. I actually went out at dusk and had the best luck - I marked all of my posts for a deck (10 of them) based upon the laser and then came back the next day and cut to the proper height. For shorter distances you might be able to see the line OK, but in full sun over something like 20 feet you might be out of luck. Perhaps with a laser target and red glasses you MIGHT see it in the right conditions.
If you really want high visibility, you'll need to pop for a green laser. However you will pay twice as much for that privilege, so you'll have to decide if it is worth the premium. For you contractors and pros out there, or even a serious DIYer who has a lot of exterior projects which would benefit from the laser the extra cost would be worth it. Check out the DEWALT DW088LG 12V Cross Line Laser, Green which includes several features the DW088k lacks including a locking feature for the laser assembly and a rechargeable battery.
For my usage this one worked well and has been helpful. I've been using DeWalt as my primary go-to brand of tools since the early 90s, and this laser is on par with the quality I've come to expect.
