13IN PLANER W/EXTRA KNIVES AND TABLES, Made in: Taiwan, Dimensions: 21.75 X 24.25 X 22. Weight: 102
From the Manufacturer
The DEWALT DW735X 13-Inch, Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer has a powerful 15 AMP, 20,000 RPM motor (10,000 RPM cutterhead speed) that handles larger cuts in wider materials with ease. The three knife cutter-head delivers 30% longer knife life and makes knife change faster and easier. The two speed gear box allows users to change feed speed to optimizing cuts per inch at 96 or 179 CPI. It has a fan-assisted chip ejection that vacuums chips off of the cutter-head and exhausts them out of the machine. With a 19-3/4" cast aluminum base it is 2X more rigid than a standard 10" base and folding tables. The automatic carriage lock reduces the movement that causes snipe without the need for manual engagement by the user. It also has a material removal gauge and extra-large thickness scale that deliver accurate cuts with every pass. The extra-large turret depth stop allows users to return to most frequently used thicknesses with ease. Includes infeed and outfeed tables and an extra set of knives.

The finish this planer leaves behind is almost flawless. That's the good. The bad is the knives dull very quickly. The ugly is this can bog down the planer and cause the motor overload to trip right in the middle of a board.
I was planing 4/4 walnut 8" wide. I had just installed fresh knives. Each pass only 1/64". Pretty slow going. During the third pass on (3) 8' long boards, the overload tripped, again. This was the third time in two hours using the planer.
Depending on where the handle on the wheel is, the head of the planer can drop due to vibration. Once I realized this was happening, I jammed a wood wedge in the wheel to keep it from moving. But the overload keeps tripping even taking less than 1/100" per pass. In 20 years with the Delta, I never had any of these problems. Tomorrow I'm sending it to Dewalt while it's still under warranty. Hopefully they can fix the tripping, stop the head from dropping and see if there's a bad motor in it.
And this thing is LOUD!!! I measured 126 db while planing a 3" wide maple board. Ear plugs and muffs together make the noise tolerable. But dust pickup is excellent.
Some owners install a Shelix cutterhead but that's another $400. You can buy a pretty decent used floor model for the price of this thing and the Shelix. If you're a serious woodworker, I wouldn't recommend this planer.
Things I like -
Smooth surface finishes on wood, so long as the blades are in good shape.
Blade changes are relatively easy.
Carbide blades are available; they last much longer.
A Byrd Shelix cutterhead is available (~$400)
Portable. While heavy, it is portable.
Excellent chip removal.
The included tool has magnets installed; this makes blade changes easier.
There is a handy tray to put blade mounting screws in during changes.... a nice touch.
Things I don't like so much -
It is very loud. Wear hearing protection!
The standard HSS blades will dull quickly on hard woods and knots.
The Wixey Digital Readout I bought needs some creativity to mount onto the embossed convex thickness scale. I wish Dewalt had left the thickness scale flat.
Top international reviews
I find it very easy to use and it usually leaves little to no noticeable snipe at the end of the board. (This was actually one of the main reasons I chose this model.)
The planer has a built in blower to eject the shavings witch is very powerful! If I hook it up to my shop vac to filter out the dust it works if the filter is clean but if the filter gets a bit clogged up the blower on the plainer can pressurize the shop vac canister and lift up the motor and then the shavings come out around the edge of the shop vac. The built in blower works better with a dust separator or a proper dust collection system with higher volume.
Overall I really like this planer and there are only two negative points to mention:
- It is quite heavy (I weighed it and it is 92 lbs or 42 KGs)
- It is very noisy (I use ear custom fitted internal ear plugs and they are great for anything else in my shop but I find it is still too noisy even with my ear plugs so I got a pair of ear muff style ear protection to wear over my ears at the same time as wearing my custom fitted internal ear plugs.)
I have a sound level meter so I did several measurements and summarized them in the table in the attached image. A lot of the noise on the back end comes out of the dust port so when my dust collection (Shop Vac) is hooked up and running the total volume is actually significantly lower than when the dust collection is not hooked up and not running.
Mirror like plate at the bottom has a scratch.
First few tries on soft and hardwood produced good results, but with a thin streak of material not removed well, will have to look at the blades.
Chip ejection probably best to be diverted elsewhere, by default it all flies on the processed piece and you need to spend a moment to dust it off.
But, with all these little issues it's still much faster to get a nice flat surface than other options.
simplemente es excelente producto, vale la pena la inversión.
