1.) One 1/8 chipper has two of the carbide teeth ground .008" greater in diameter than all the rest of every tooth in the whole set. I verified this by measuring with calipers. This leaves a 1/8" wide x .008" deep step groove deeper than the rest of the bottom of the dado cut. Kind of a nuisance, but I hope they will warranty the one chipper and not ask me to send back the whole dado set.
2.) Some of the shims have a burr on the edges. I had to stone them flat. Minor issue.
Update 29DEC17: reply from DeWalt Customer Care within 24 hours of inquiry states:
"Thank you for contacting us. I apologize for the problem you are experiencing with your chipper. I'm sending a replacement and it will be coming via UPS in 5 - 7 days..."
Thank you, DeWalt. Excellent response.
Update 05JAN18: Received a complete replacement dado SET! I was expecting just the chipper. There was no request to send back the first set. Very unexpected. I thank DeWalt, and I don't want to seem unappreciative, but it does seem like an over-reaction.
An interesting observation: one of the chippers in the replacement set had the exact same issue (too large by .008). In both sets it was the first 1/8" chipper in the stack of chippers (as they were packaged) that was ground incorrectly.
So, do I bump the rating up to 5 stars? The product as I now have in hand is a 5-star rating, but both sets had the same issue. The net effect of DeWalt's quick warranty work did in fact leave me with a more than acceptable solution. Over-all, the product does have a flaw that DeWalt is willing to correct if you contact Customer Service.
4-1/2 Stars would seem appropriate, but since that can't be, I'll round down and keep it at 4 just because in my experience there is an issue in any one dado set.
To me the best part (a convenience) is that the shims don't need to be used unless one needs to add a little to adjust for some thickness variation, or to accommodate a metric size. It's built for standard inch fractions. So, when you want 1/2" you just use 2 outer blades plus 2 1/8" chippers in between..
For just a bit over $100 it's a quality product. All chippers have 4 cutters. The case holds everything firmly in place. It latches tight to keep dust out.
I can highly recommend this product.
