DEWALT’s DWP849X 7-inch/9-inch variable-speed polisher with soft start offers the best of power and performance thanks to its 12-amp motor and variable-speed capabilities. Whether you’re polishing cars and boats for detailing projects or finishing metal and concrete surfaces, the feature-packed DWP849X delivers the pace and control necessary for applications often undertaken by metal fabricators, paint specialists, auto and boat detailers, and DIYers alike.
The DWP849X’s commanding 12-amp motor delivers 1,250 max watts out and 0-600/0-3,5000 RPM to power through demanding applications, yet the conveniently located two-finger variable-speed trigger allows you to maintain complete control no matter the momentum. The all ball-bearing construction and heat-treated precision-cut steel gears further ensure long-term durability and smooth operation. Plus, it’s equipped with DEWALT’s exclusive Controlled Finishing System with soft start, which provides improved speed control and finish quality. Integrated wool ingestion shields increase the polisher’s lifespan and reduce costs associated with servicing and repairs.
All that power doesn’t compromise on user comfort, though, thanks to the DWP849X’s light 6.7-pound weight that allows you to polish and finish surfaces over longer run times and at various angles. Additionally, it comes with a three-position bale handle along with the traditional side handle, expanding the number of gripping options to best tackle the project at hand. The rear handle is ergonomically sculpted with a rubber overmold to further improve comfort, and the non-marring rubber gear case cover helps to minimize finish scratches or scuff marks—combining the best of form and function for any polishing needs.
The DWP849X’s included hook-and-loop backing pad makes for quick and easy tool-free accessory changes, and the DWP849X is compatible with a variety of hook-and-loop accessories from any number of brands to maximize options depending on the application.

The tool is heavy duty - it runs continuously with no problem and can handle reasonably heavy loads. I wouldn't quite call it commercial grade but it is very close to it. The average pro working on cars will unlikely tap the tool's potential.
The tool does heat up after continuous use - it doesn't blow hot air from the cooling fan on the user, but there are a couple of metal spots on the body of the tool that get hot - the handles are fine but if you grab the body of the tool to set it down or pick it up, you won't get burned but it will get your attention.
The soft start feature is nice, but there is one quirk: Pulling the trigger too rapidly causes the tool to overshoot the targeted RPM. When the spindle is just starting, the constant RPM feature appears to adjust input voltage or current to maintain the RPM based on the user's input into the trigger. Pull the trigger a little too fast and the tool ramps up the power rather fast - if the tool isn't under load, the spindle will spin too fast and gradually settle into the target RPM. This isn't a big deal as any reasonable user will find the modulation perfect for polishing - but if your finger slips or you accidentally goose the trigger while using it, the tool will respond with a big jump in power. That can catch you off guard a little if you don't anticipate it.Read more ›
My shop produces high performance concrete products. We mainly use this polisher to grind the rough backsides of castings back with a stock removal wheel. This is hard on a grinder/polisher and depending on the size of the project it can take two or three hours of grinding. We've burned out many weaker grinders over time. Based on how this Dewalt feels and has performed so far I'm expecting a long service life from it.
Great speed range.
Good balance and weight.
Good placement of the trigger, lock, & speed controls.
It can bounce if you're not careful when using a small wheel.
It needs a standard collar at the base of the arbor. If it weren't for this I would give it five stars. It is small and smooth preventing the attachment of any dust extraction shrouds but their own. Their shroud is inferior. It is opaque, expensive, and most important NOT adjustable. Different pads, wheels, and attachments have different heights. If you are just polishing this will not matter to you. For grinding concrete this is vital to personal safety. There is at least one company I saw at the World of Concrete this year that makes an adapter for the collar so they can accept standard grinder attachments. I lost their brochure and have not been able to find them yet. Until I find them or a better solution I have removed the black plastic guard and wrapped several layers of Gorilla Duct Tape around the collar for my Dust Buddy shroud to bite into. This is temporary and must be readjusted if you grind so long that the heat builds up and softens the adhesive. It would be so easy for them to just build this with the same standard collar that goes on every angle grinder they make.

Really like this X model over the old style. It goes down to 600 rpm which is sweet for polishing, has a rubberized grip, and wool shields over the motor vents. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Amazon Customer
