(1) While the saw includes a sheet indicating that the saw is "pre-lubricated", this is not quite true. The gear case for the worm drive is almost empty. (I suspect they drain the gear case of lube oil in order to avoid having to ship the item under various U.S. regulations regarding shipping "hazardous materials".) So buy some 85W-140 gear oil before you use this saw, and top-off the gear case. I was surprised how much gear oil it took to top-off the gear case.
(2) When mounting blades, be absolutely sure that the blade is mounted according to the correct rotation direction for cutting - i.e., CLOCKWISE, (according to the arrow embedded on the blade guard). DO NOT assume that the printed side of a blade should face outward - more often than not, the printed side of a blade should face INWARD to the saw. It is easy to determine the correct orientation for mounting the saw blade - either use the direction indicated on the blade itself, or use common sense when looking at the blade and the cuttting edges.
I learned these lessons the hard way - by loaning my DeWalt to a neighbor who did not know, and ended up ruining my saw. (He had the blade mounted the wrong way, and there was not enough gear oil in the saw.) So I bought a replacement saw - being essentially the same DeWalt saw I bought earlier. (Of note,. I bought my replacement saw directly from Ace Hardware since their price was onsiderably lower than the best price available on Amazon.)
I really wanted to buy a worm-drive circular saw made in the U.S. (or somewhere other than China),.but there just don't seem to be any available new worm-drive saws which are made outside of China. So, I ended up "re-buying" this saw, even though it's made in China. It's still a verty good saw. Not as good as the old "made in USA Skilsaw" (I had one, and it was stolen from me), but the DeWalt saw is probably the best to be had at this time.
Bottom line - this saw is not a simple tool (like a handsaw). Rather, it is a complicated tool, and needs to be understood before using it. My only reason for giving this product a 4-star review is a lack of emphasis in the enclosed materials regarding the proper use of the tool (and esp. regarding the gear case oil situation). Yes, the enclosed booklet mentions blade orientation, but perhaps more emphasis needs to be provided.
I have used this side by side with the tried and true skilsaw worm drive. The dewalt is quieter, no torque twist on startup, and has a better cutting line indicator. I generally watch the blade not the indicator anyway, but the dewalt has 3 points of reference. Honestly they are both good saws, but when you start the skill saw up it twists in your hand so when your plunge cutting it is easy to hit the work piece.
This is an amazing saw, after going through two or three consumer grade "sidewinder" saws this is a real treat. It's big, it's heavy and it will cut through anything you throw at it. I actually feel safer with this saw, there has been more than once my old saw would bind and buck and kick back, this saw typically will plow right through. Having the blade on the left side is ideal for a righty too, no leaning over the saw peeking at the line and risking getting sawdust thrown into your eyes..
CONS: It's heavy - lighter than others in it's class it is far heavier than the typical consumer grade saw. A bit pricey for consumers, fairly priced compared to it's peers.
PROS: It will cut through tough, thick and knotty wood like butter. The left sided blade makes it easier to follow a line for righties. Lefties are going to have the same issues righties always had with blade right saws. Professionals will see this as a worthy saw for construction work, heavy duty hobbyists like me will appreciate the power and accuracy.
One side note: This saw takes regular circular saw blades - 7.25" X 5/8" arbor only it has a diamond arbor. If the blade you buy has a round hole you will have to punch out the diamond shape punch that are found on most blades. I've bought a few cheap blades that only had a round arbor and lacked the diamond punch out - most all GOOD blades do have it. This saw even has a nifty hook on the front to make it easy to pop out this diamond. Just make sure any blade you buy shows the diamond indent around the arbor hole.
---Change the oil---
That being said, I bought this saw because I want it to last for a long time. When I first used the saw it had a strong kick. This was fine, but soon I noticed that the sound of the saw was off... not smooth. I ignored it, but then decided to change the oil to be safe. When I changed the oil I was shocked that the stock oil was so low and poor quality. I didn't seem like gear oil, it was more thin. Not the best quality.... attached are pictures of the oil change. You can see the color difference and the low amount of oil in the saw from the factory. Now the saw hums and the kick is reduced. Love this saw, but change the oil.
Top international reviews
First job was making a pile of 5" blocks out of 2xs for spacers. For speed, consistency and safety, I put together a quick jig. As expected, this saw shined at this. I made a pile of blocks in minutes, with only a few hesitations from the saw. Most of the hesitations were from one particular 2x with very tight grains, and the wood twisted in the jig. Even the kick back was tame, and easily handled (probably due to the mass).
Blade wobble seems minor, and the saw is nicely balanced considering its heft.
1) Buy 85W-140 oil when you buy this. I got some at CT. As other reviewers mentioned, the oil is very low from the factory. Ignore the paper in the box that says it has oil from the factory. The oil level is too low as per Dewalt's own instructions.
2) I'd love if it came with a tool bag. It's big, and I'd like to have a toolbag for it, the wrench, some blades and perhaps the oil.
I look forward to making a panel jig and track guide for this for some of the project I have coming up.
Also electronic blade stop is missing - It would be nice to be added on newer models...
Heavy duty, a proper tool. Excellent confidence when using this.
