DeWalt was always a name you could trust in tools and now it appears that they have developed a book that you can trust to help you prepare for your Journeyman, Contractor and Master Licensing Exams. Mind you, this is not a study guide, but rather a book that will help you practice how to take an exam and learn basic test taking strategies. I've heard many people claim that they knew the material prior to taking an exam, but that they flubbed it because they are not "exam takers." At times no matter how well you know your material, you simply have to learn how to take a test and this exam guide will help you do just that.

This book is not unlike those you might find for the SAT or LSAT guides, but is a bit less expansive as the material is not as broad-based. You will need to practice, practice, practice until you are comfortable with the examination process itself and have an idea as to what will be expected of you. The practice exams can also be found on a CD for those who are more comfortable working on a computer.

Remember, this is not a study guide. There are an assortment of texts that can be purchased to work with when you need to learn about the National Electrical Code (NEC) to pass your test during or after your apprenticeship. In this book you will learn how to prepare for your examination or quizzes, how to study, what to study, you'll learn some helpful hints, basic references, useful formulas (how to find amps, kilowatts, horsepower, etc.), and you'll be able to look at a chart that shows state-by-state licensing requirements for electrical contractors. There are practice exams for maintenance, residential, journeyman, master, residential, and sign electricians for a total of twenty-three exams.

My field is mainly in Information Technology and Project Management. Over the years I've studied for many tests and taken plenty of practice exams.

The first thing this book tells you is it is not a study guide and it is not there to teach a novice or beginner the basics. The exam guide is just that - a guide for the professionals in the field with extensive knowledge who are taking the exam to be licensed.

In the exam preparation department I was really impressed with the strategies, questions, and explanations. You can read and try to answer questions as a novice and certainly pick up points and information, but this really isn't the purpose of the book. It is really geared towards presenting questions as they are in the exam and showing those who are taking the test how even one word off the answer could be wrong and the things to look for while testing.

The majority of the book is filled with practice exams and page after page of questions one would find on the real test. Being an electrician by trade and then using a study guide and finally using this book as a primer for the test questions and what to expect would be excellent preparation for passing the exam.

When I first took the NEC test I used the other book "Electrician's Exam and Preparation Guide" to study for it and I failed the test. One reason the other books exam isn't like the real test. The DeWalt book is based off the real test. The questions you get on the CD are like the ones in the actual exam. You don't just get one test for the different types of electrical tests Journeyman, Masters, Contractor, Maintenance and Residential, They give you many tests per category. When they give you a question there is an option to locate what part of the code book pertains to that question and after you answer the question it will tell you if you get it wrong. I wish they would of had a timer and gave you a 4 hour clock so you could pace yourself like the actual test, well nothing is perfect.

Update 4/4/12: I just took the California exam and a heads up to anybody that takes it, the California test seems to have around a third of the test strictly on the chapter 5 thru 9 which this book doesn't really get that much into. I also found out that California doesn't allow bookmarks, notes or highlighting.

I have only had this for a few days but it is great. I am a certified field electrician and work on traffic signals. I have done a lot of outdoor and also some indoor wiring. I am getting close to retirement and thought I might get licensed for electrical work in the home industry. So far I have learned a lot from the practice test and the references to the code book. Very good book.

A workbook sized book with white pages and clear fonts to read, this review book is well laid out. There are different sections which help you to prepare BEFORE you take the tests in the book by providing information on:

How to Prepare for the Exam
How to Study
What to Study
Helpful Hints on Taking the Exam
Typical Regulations at Exam Site
Typical Questions
How to Use the Book

There are very practical well laid out ideas on getting the most from this book. For instance, there are sample questions to give you an idea on what questions will be like BEFORE taking the review exams.

There are suggestions for answering every question in your book and highlighting in your NEC for future reference. It also tells you to answer questions you DO know first and then check the answers you don't for future study and reference.

It is also recommended that only one practice exam be taken at any given time period, with lapses in between to avoid study fatigue.
