I built three (2' x 4' x 2') cages with a ring every inch and I didn't need any more hog rings than what originally came with the pliers. I would definitely buy again.
Great for: big projects where tons of hog rings are needed (fencing, etc).
Not great for: precision work; high tension work
These pliers are angled at a right angle so the auto feeder can be used. This is great for projects where tons of rings need to be placed but this is not so great for precision work like upholstery (which is what I bough them for). Pliers where you load each ring individually are much more precise for getting into small places. These pliers will not get into small places.
Also unlike the single load pliers, these pliers do not fully make a small loop. They make a large loop that you have to close with hand pliers if you want a tighter loop.
Lastly, I don't know if this has to do with the rings being part of a strip (and that dictating the strength) or just because DeWalt packages a weaker ring with this kit, but these hog rings are very soft and weak. These are not the hard strong hog rings I am used to and have worked with in the past. So, see if it is possible to buy stronger strips of hog rings for use with these pliers. The rings included with this kit are very soft and light.
So, this might be the right kit for you but make sure you know what you are getting first. These pliers value speed and convenience over strength and precision.
-My kids wanna do it too! It does take some extra hand strength to squeeze it tight, and the 9 year old had a tough time. It takes some muscle.
-Sometimes it was hard to crimp the chicken in just the right spot
-The staples don't fully squeeze all the way tight. There is about a 2 mm opening no matter how hard you squeeze.
-The included staples do appear to be galvanized, but they have already started to show signs of rust after just several weeks of the elements.
On the other hand, it really did do the task, and was fast. Just aim it right around the chicken wire sheets, and squeeze, and move on to the next. Loading new staples is easy and fast too. Basically, it gets the job done, and seemed much better than using zip ties.
