Product Description

Ensure your baby—and you—enjoy more restful sleep with the Sound Sleeper Audio Relaxer. Featuring 10 soothing sounds—womb, bird, brook, buoy, ocean, rain, seagull, summer night, thunder and wind—the Sound Sleeper masks annoying household and street sounds that can wake Baby. Select a single sound, a combination of sounds or the random mode. Imported. 5-yr. manufacturer's warranty. 2-1/4Hx4-1/4Wx8L.

For parents whose vocal cords can’t hold out for 200 rounds of "Hush Little Baby," a sound machine is a must for baby bedtime routines. And the DEX Sound Sleeper is one of the best ones we’ve ever found. This small (6 by 10 by 12 inches), simple device features a high quality speaker, on/off or 60-minute timer switch, volume control, single, combine, or random mode, power adapter capability, headphone jack (headphones not included), and, most spectacularly, 10 sound options which can be combined to make 24 sound combinations altogether.

Doctors and sleep experts recommend a consistent, relaxing sleep routine for newborns and older babies. Freeing baby’s sleep environment of jarring or distracting outside noises is an important step in creating a soothing space for sleep. The Sound Sleeper provides just enough peaceful background noise to block household hubbub. Once baby becomes familiar with the sounds of this machine, she’ll probably start yawning the minute she hears it! The Sounds of (Near) Silence
The sounds of Sound Sleeper don’t have to be boring, just relaxing and repetitive. Experiment with the various sounds to find the perfect soporific.

Summer Night
The buzz of peeper frogs and insects is a happy, sleepy, country sound.

What’s cozier than curling up in bed with a gentle rainstorm pattering outside the window?

Burble, burble, burble—just don’t try this one when your toddler is potty-training!

The deep tranquility of a calm ocean is unmatched for its lulling ability.

The wind blows quietly in the trees, but you and baby are safe and sound at home.

The rhythmic swishing sounds of the womb: it’s a natural for soothing baby!

Just a few lonely seagull cries, widely spaced.

Pretty, delicate bird song.

The distant ringing of a bell buoy. Great in combination with the Ocean sound.

Thunder rumbles, but the storm always stays far off in the distance. Best combined with Rain, of course.

Experiment with the Combine mode to find the perfect sleep-inducing sounds for your baby. We like Brook and Bird, Wind and Thunder, and Ocean and Buoy, but who knows? Maybe the magic combination will be Womb and Seagull!

The power adapter feature of the Sound Sleeper is very handy for everyday use. The ability to leave the sound machine on all night long (or put it on the one-hour timer) is invaluable. Babies are notorious for waking up throughout the night; when they hear the same soothing sounds they fell asleep to, it will be much easier to return to those sweet dreams.--Emilie Coulter

This is just fantastic. We previously were using the lulaby bear but the darn thing kept messing up. We went through three of them before finding this. Here is the break down:

1. Can have it play all night or use the automatic shut off.
2. Tons of sounds to choose from
3. Small, fits in our playards little rack where we keep diapers and such. Also easy to pack when staying somewhere overnight.
4. Has the option to plug in to save money instead of wasting batteries, but the battery option is nice to have two since you do not always have an outlet everywhere.
5. Can program it to play one sound, play two sounds at the same time (such as rain w/ thunder), or you can choose the option for it to play sounds at random.
6. Easy Easy Easy to use. I never even read the instruction manual.

1. It does not go real real loud.
To give an example of how loud it goes. If we turn it up to full volume and close the bedroom door we can hear it (it is on the far side of the room away from the door, our room is an average master bedroom) if there is not another sound going on. But if the T.V, dishwasher, dogs, or shower is running anywhere in the house we cannot hear it. That is more than enough for us, especially since it is right next to our babies crib and as long as he hears it we are happy. Also when we go to bed and all things are off in the house we have to turn it down to its lowest volume otherwise it is too loud. I hope that helps!!

I just wanted to write a quick comment about the volume of this product. I was extremely hesitant to buy this model because of the complaints I read from others regarding the volume. We received the Sound Sleeper in the mail yesterday and used it last night. I was very happy with the volume...we could hear it in our bedroom without a monitor. I also did not have it turned as loud as it would go because I thought the volume would be too loud. The baby slept great and I am more than satisifed with the purchase. Do not let volume be your deciding factor. The AC adapter is great too, never have to worry about batteries.

I just purchased this item for my son, who is 4 weeks old and has a LOUD big sister who keeps waking him up... a few pros and cons:

The womb sound is wonderful, puts him right to sleep. It's a little annoying to listen to on the monitor, but if the baby is sleeping I won't complain! The other sounds are also nice, but this is the one that works for us.

The power cord is also great... wonderful not to have to rely on batteries.

The rubber feet on the bottom grip surfaces really well so the unit doesn't slide around at all.

The price was right. :)

The timer is a nice touch, though it could have a few other options in terms of length of time.

Volume... it really doesn't go up high enough to be useful in blocking out a toddler in the next room.

Sound choice... as I said, the womb sound is great, but the rest are nothing special. I can't imagine any baby finding the sound combos very special... brids and thunder aren't particularly soothing and they actually wake my little guy up. It is lacking a real solid white noise sound, like the kind a fan or a car makes.

No way to hook it to the crib. That is an option other machines like this seem to have, and it would have been handy to get the unit closer to baby and his ears! As it is, you have to put it on a surface like the floor or a dresser.

Hope that is helpful... we are glad to have it for soothing the baby, but I still have to turn on a fan or something in the baby's room to really block other household noises.

EA Fow is right (see his review from July 20, 2013 and my comment to it). This is different than the old model. This new one does NOT run on batteries. You MUST plug it in to make it work. The product description here still refers to the old model, which was a better design.

The new design has space for 4 AA batteries, just like the old model. However, they work only in Demo Mode. Switch it to Normal Mode and the machine immediately shuts off unless you plug it into an outlet. Also, the AC/DC power adapter of the new model is permanently attached to the unit -- it cannot be unplugged from the unit like the old model. Oddly enough, the polarity symbols are still there on the bottom, just like on the old unit, as though you could unplug it.

This design change makes no sense to me. The old version was very good for the price. Most of the 5-star reviews here on Amazon are for the old model. If you are looking for a sound machine that runs on batteries, this is not the unit for you! Don't make the same mistake I did!

To give some more background, I bought the older model from about 6 years ago. It looks exactly like the new one (except for the adapter) and it worked with either batteries or AC power. I bought a replacement despite EA Fow's warnings because I figured he must be doing something wrong. Nope. It arrived today. The now-permanently-attached power adapter on the new unit is the ONLY way to make it work. Why would DEX change the design this way? What sense does it make to have space for batteries if they are nonfunctional? It's crazy, but it's true.

The reason I bought it was because the spot where the power adapter plugs into the machine broke up into the body of my old unit. Maybe that's why they changed the design? Who knows.
