Top customer reviews
There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
First problem: It didn't even ship until more than a week after I ordered it. Annoying, but it did say "USUALLY ships in 3-5 days".
Second problem: As others have mentioned, it was missing a vital part- two supports are needed when it's folded out as a bed, and it was missing one. It can still be used as a sofa without both, we just put the one we had in front, but we ordered a futon, not a sofa.
Now for the pros:
It's not very heavy. Actually, the mattress is heavier than this frame.
It was easy to assemble (minus the missing part).
Without a mattress, it's easy to fold up and down. With an 8 inch coil mattress, at least at first, it's very difficult to fold back up to a sofa.
I ordered the parts replacement easily online and received confirmation that it should arrive within 7 days, despite trying to call the company to order and being told they are "closed for the holidays" (on June 24th).
Overall I believe this is a great quality sturdy frame and an excellent value- It's unfortunate that the delivery experience has given me a negative first impression.
Assembly - Pretty simple to assemble. Everything is marked clearly. Each part of the frame and each group of hardware is labeled and easy to identify. The instructions use these labels to show you exactly what you need for each step. The instructions do include pretty easy to follow pictures in addition to the text. Took about 15 minutes to assemble.
Cons - There are a couple cons. I'm only removing one star though as they aren't catastrophic issues. Just annoyances. The first is the mattress holders. Mine just fall right out. It says to gently pull back until they lock in place. Mine do not lock. I got frustrated and even pulled back to the point they were about to bend. Still didn't lock. I was going to glue them in but just tried it without them and every thing works fine without them installed so in the end no big deal in my case. The only other con is switching from bed to couch. I'm sure there is some magic trick to it but I have yet to find it. You have to sort of grab one end on the corners and pull one end up and one end towards the other. That probably doesn't make sense without actually seeing it done. Regardless, it's kind of a pain to get back in the couch position. For those two relatively minor issues I feel I have to take at least one star away. But I still recommend it and am happy with the purchase. Just want to cover everything I've found so far.
Also, note that pictures currently posted on Amazon for this item show a different assembly than the instructions recommend. In the pictures currently posted for this frame, the arms are shown in a reversed position (flat sides out), whereas the instructions indicated to assemble the frame with the flat sides in.The other sides of the arms are not flat. They have a recessed channel that follows the arc. Also, the handles on the lower frame that hold the mattress in place are actually assembled so they are perpendicular to the bottom frame piece (so they keep the mattress from sliding), not parallel to the frame as shown in the current pictures.
Look to another brand for a futon frame. The DHP mattress I ordered with this frame seems to be of good design and quality, but DHP futon frames? Pass on those.
My negatives are the instructions are non-existent and I have just now noticed I put the sides on backwards (well one should not drink and assemble at 3am also). Most importantly my previous version had a support leg in the middle of the front and this one does not. The couch and bed mode will tip if the edge is sat on, especially at the most awkward times and dump the occupant on the floor, so that must be remedied with a support. I chose a brick under the centre strengthening support and it looks a bit family den style and falls over as the bed/couch flexes due to movement occupant movement or being kicked (it is a toe foe). The support should be attached. The next negative is that it does squeak and make other noises with any movement making even rolling over or getting off of the bed/couch an announced event. Switching modes with the mattress I bought is almost a two person effort
Oh, it is not designed for a cotton futon but a mattress which was fine with me as I wanted better support. I chose a DHP 8-Inch Independently-Encased Coil Premium Futon Mattress, Full Size, Tan and have been ecstatic about that selection.
