Grateful Dead, Philadelphia Spectrum 9/72. (something special about this month). Dark Star>Morning Dew! Wow! Great playing in the band too. Instead of going into the extended jam after He's Gone/Trucking, the medley ends quickly. Seems like they save all the jams for Dark Star, what a great version!! Every song is flawless.

i'm writing this review now because i just got this release;;because i have so much from 1972 i was slow to pick this up and did after hearing how good the dark star is. well, i must say how happy i am to finally get it.i would highly recommend listening to this in the car as it's really high energy dead,,,perfect for cruising.. there are lots of highlights as this is a large 4 disk set. an early surprise is a sweet, birdsong, at over 13 min,, it's a nice jammin' early song choice.the china/rider is a rocker;;then later the ramble/ cumberland blues/playing in the band, is a nice stretch of rocked out early show dead.. this whole first set is awesome; and the band is clearly ON tonight.. he's gone/ truckin is a nice jam at a combined 26+ min..we are really going places now ! but what follows is what makes this show truly a winner,, one of the best dark stars you will ever hear. it combines all the sweet music that some of the good shorter versions have with lots of new experimenting throughout,[they go to some wayout places], that really makes this one unique and it's a keeper at over 37 min....into a really nice morning dew. a great jam..!! there are ever more highlights,, nfa,, gdtrfb,,nfa ,,and omsn, makes for a rocking close out..then bonus cuts to fill the last disk..i gotta say this is a GREAT dicks picks..your ears will definetly be smiling ..5 stars

This is another great Fall 1972 show! Following the superb 9/17 Baltimore show captured on  Dick's Picks 23  by only four days, the band sounds slightly more tired and raggedy here in Phlly, less funky, and more hell-bent for leather. Their sound in those days, with only Bill Kreutzmann on drums, had more hard-charging propulsion than their sound with two drummers from earlier and later after the 1974-76 Vacation when Mickey Hart rejoined the band.

The First Set fills Disc One and half of Disc Two. Highlights for me are a "China Cat>Rider" with Garcia once again causing me to wonder whether he is fully awake yet, as with the Baltimore show; the poignant dual vocals of "Jack Straw;" a powerful "Loser;" and then the magnificent finale of "Cumberland Blues" and "Playing In the Band," an awesome jam.

The Second Set begins on Disc Two, and includes a good "Truckin'", but not nearly as good as the fantastic one from Baltimore. Moving on to Disc Three, we find an amazing "Dark Star>Morning Dew" and strong performances of "Sugar Magnolia" and "Friend of the Devil," which sounds great in electrified form. Disc Four starts with a rollicking "Not Fade Away>Goin' Down the Road>Not Fade Away," and then the Philly show ends with a high energy "One More Saturday Night."

To fill out the disc, we have three songs from 9/3 Boulder show, including an astounding "The Other One" jam, and finishing with a strong "Wharf Rat."

The Dead were on fire in the Fall of 1972, and this is among the best of all the available live recordings!

The Dead rolled into the Philadelphia Spectrum on Thursday after a hot show on Tuesday at the Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. The first set begins innocently enough with Promised Land to open the show. The fun begins right off with a long and jammed out Bird Song followed by a nice El Paso. The China Cat Sunflower->I Know You Rider is full of more jammy fun. Weir rocks the band out on a stellar Black-Throated Wind while Jerry goes off in blues mode with a hot Big Railroad Blues. Jack Straw, Loser, Big River and Ramble On Rose were still fairly new to the band at this time but you would never guess from listening to these versions. Cumberland Blues is a fun song and the set ending Playing In The Band gets out there.

The second set begins with a cool opening combo of He's Gone->Truckin'. Black Peter is it's beautiful self and Mexicali Blues picks up the festivities. Next up is a supernova Dark Star->Morning Dew lasting nearly 45 minutes. Beat It On Down The Line is a nice follow up. An early Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo even if it's not as developed as later versions. Sugar Magnolia rocks and is followed by an upbeat Friend Of The Devil. The set comes crashing to an end with a great version of Not Fade Away->Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad->Not Fade Away. The encore is One More Saturday Night.

To round out this release, the vault archivists used the He's Gone->The Other One->Wharf Rat from 9-3-72 at Folsom Field, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO (Sunday). This was the show that began the tour. This show was originally one of Dick's first picks for a release but was nixed at the time. It would end up being the last Dick's Picks.

This is my hometown venue and I have seen The Grateful Dead there many times. This 1972 performance captures an exciting night and a great show!

Set One is filled with "cowboy country" tunes from Bob Weir like El Paso, Black Throated Wind, Jackstraw, Big River, and Cumberland Blues. Jerry Garcia is on fire on the lead guitar from the onset, In Set Two Weir continues to lead the way through classics such as Truckin', Mexicali Blues, Beat It On Down The Line, and Sugar Magnolia. There is a classic Dark Star which blends into a lovely Garcia inspired Morning Dew. The Dead jam through Not Fade Away > Goin' Down The Road > Not Fade Away as the crowd goes wild, and puts the finishing touches on a great concert with One More Saturday Night. I was there and can personally attest to the band's motto: what a long strange trip it has been!
